We returned to Barcelos with a very simple intention: to see it outside the glitz of Christmas lights. Nothing against the festive version of the city, but there's always something that goes unnoticed when everything is decorated, illuminated, and enveloped in ambient music. I wanted to understand Barcelos in its normal, more everyday version.

Voltámos a Barcelos com uma intenção muito simples. Vê-la fora do brilho das luzes de Natal. Nada contra a versão festiva da cidade, mas há sempre algo que nos passa ao lado quando tudo está decorado, iluminado e embalado por música ambiente. Queria perceber Barcelos na sua versão normal, mais quotidiana.
We parked the car in the area where the famous Barcelos Fair takes place. On Thursdays, that space transforms into one of the largest and oldest traditional fairs in Portugal, with origins dating back to the 15th century, when King Afonso V officially authorized its holding. For centuries, it was there that farmers, artisans, and merchants gave life to the local economy. That day, however, the space was occupied by carousels, trampolines, churros stalls, and traditional biscuit stands.

Estacionámos o carro no espaço onde se realiza a famosa Feira de Barcelos. À quinta-feira, aquele recinto transforma-se numa das maiores e mais antigas feiras tradicionais de Portugal, com origens que remontam ao século XV, quando D. Afonso V autorizou oficialmente a sua realização. Durante séculos, foi ali que agricultores, artesãos e comerciantes deram vida à economia local. Nesse dia, porém, o espaço estava ocupado por carroseis, trampolins, barracas de churros e biscoitos tradicionais.
We crossed the street and found ourselves on Avenida da Liberdade. And I confess I wasn't prepared for what I saw. The avenue was full of yellow and red tulips, aligned with such precision. It was one of those moments when the plan takes a backseat and you naturally slow down. The colors jumped out at you, vibrant. After months of gray tones and persistent rain, that scenery seemed like a small reminder that spring is near.

Atravessamos a estrada e estamos na Avenida da Liberdade. E confesso que não estava preparada para o que vi. A avenida estava repleta de tulipas amarelas e vermelhas, alinhadas com uma precisão. Foi daqueles momentos em que o plano passa para segundo plano e se abranda naturalmente o passo. As cores saltavam à vista, vivas. Depois de meses de tons cinzentos e chuva persistente, aquele cenário parecia uma pequena lembrança que anuncia que a primavera esta perto.
Walking was simple and pleasant. Avenida da Liberdade functions as one of the city's main arteries, connecting commercial and residential areas. It's comfortable. And that day, with the tulips in the spotlight, it was a very beautiful surprise for me.

Caminhar foi simples e agradável. A Avenida da Liberdade funciona como uma das principais artérias da cidade, ligando zonas comerciais e residenciais. É confortável. E naquele dia, com as tulipas em destaque, foi uma surpresa muito bonita para mim.
We then headed towards the Jardim Velho de Barcelos, one of the city's most emblematic green spaces. This garden has roots in the 19th century and has been the stage for different phases of Barcelos' urban life. Today it is a natural meeting point for those who want to rest, read a book, or simply observe the movement.

Seguimos depois em direção ao Jardim Velho de Barcelos, um dos espaços verdes mais emblemáticos da cidade. Este jardim tem raízes no século XIX e já foi palco de diferentes fases da vida urbana barcelense. Hoje é um ponto de encontro natural para quem quer descansar, ler um livro ou simplesmente observar o movimento.
It was there that we found the statue in homage to the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela. The sculpture celebrates Barcelos' historical connection to the Way of St. James, more specifically to the Portuguese Way. For centuries, pilgrims have crossed this region on their way to Santiago de Compostela, towards the cathedral where, according to tradition, the remains of the apostle Saint James are kept.

Foi ali que encontramos a estátua de homenagem aos peregrinos de Santiago de Compostela. A escultura celebra a ligação histórica de Barcelos ao Caminho de Santiago, mais concretamente ao Caminho Português. Durante séculos, peregrinos atravessaram esta região a caminho de Santiago de Compostela, em direção à catedral onde, segundo a tradição, se encontram os restos mortais do apóstolo São Tiago.
Barcelos is not just a city that pilgrims pass through. It's a stopping place for many. The legend of the Rooster of Barcelos itself is linked to a Jacobean episode, involving a pilgrim unjustly accused who was miraculously saved. This narrative helped transform the rooster into one of Portugal's greatest symbols.

Barcelos não é apenas uma cidade que os peregrinos atravessam. É um lugar de paragem para muitos. A própria lenda do Galo de Barcelos está ligada a um episódio jacobeu, envolvendo um peregrino injustamente acusado que foi salvo por milagre. Essa narrativa ajudou a transformar o galo num dos maiores símbolos de Portugal.
While observing the statue in the Old Garden, I thought about how many stories have passed through there. People fulfilling promises, seeking answers, testing physical and emotional limits. Today, many continue the journey out of faith, others for personal challenge, others simply for the experience. Whatever the motivation, there is something profoundly human in that act of walking long distances in search of meaning.

Enquanto observava a estátua no Jardim Velho, pensei em quantas histórias passaram por ali. Pessoas a cumprir promessas, a procurar respostas, a testar limites físicos e emocionais. Hoje, muitos continuam a fazer o caminho por fé, outros por desafio pessoal, outros simplesmente pela experiência. Seja qual for a motivação, há algo de profundamente humano naquele ato de caminhar longas distâncias em busca de significado.
Without the Christmas bustle, Barcelos seemed more beautiful. More tranquil. The tulips on the avenue, the fairgrounds, the symbolism of the Camino de Santiago in the Old Garden. All of this went unnoticed by us last time.

Sem a azáfama natalícia, Barcelos revelou-se mais bonita. Mais tranquila. As tulipas na avenida, o recinto da feira, o simbolismo do Caminho de Santiago no Jardim Velho. Tudo isto nos passou despercebido da última vez.
Returning to a familiar place but in a different context is almost like rereading a book years later. The story is the same, but the perspective changes. And sometimes it is precisely this second reading that allows us to see the details that previously went unnoticed.
Barcelos, without Christmas lights, surprised us in a positive way. We're so glad we went.

Regressar a um lugar já conhecido mas em contexto diferente, é quase como reler um livro anos depois. A história é a mesma, mas a perspetiva muda. E às vezes é precisamente essa segunda leitura que nos permite ver os detalhes que antes passaram despercebidos.
Barcelos, sem luzes de Natal, surpreendeu-nos pela positiva. Ainda bem que lá fomos.
