Ben worked for the railway. His (to be) wife became pregnant during thier courtship. Ben decided to leave back to St.John,N.B.. His father in law (to be) got on train and found Ben before he reached St. John and brought him back to marry his daughter.

Ben was an alledged bootlegger. He was said to have smuggled rum from Jamaica. There is one family tale as told by Gully Johnson that he was involved with exchange of gunfire while onboard a ship making for the Nova Scotia coast. He was said to have escaped.

His run in with the law in Quebec is more documented when he was charged with avoiding income tax as became popular in the USA to deal with successful bootleggers.
