Most people live in the heavily light poluted areas. Some have never seen the Milky Way with their own eyes. Of course, the camera's sensor is patiently collecting the photons for 15-30 seconds, depending on your equipment, so the final images look the way your eye can never see it.
However, it's still quite fascinating to see the Milky Way from a very dark location. For me it's always a trip back to the childhood and summer nights spent on the village at my grandparents place. Sometimes it was so hot that we were sleeping outside and the sky was amazing. There are lyrics from one Croatian band saying 'from all the stars I cannot even see the sky'. It summs it up pretty nicely...
