A plant as another member of the family [Eng/Esp]

There are presences in a house that weave their own story through the days, and they are not precisely people or pets, but they still have a name, a space, and, above all, a meaning. In my house, that presence is several pots of Peperomia obtusifolia, or as my mom has always called it: "the money plant."

I don't remember exactly when it first arrived. I think it was one of those silent transfers that ended up taking root in our lives, but what I do remember is that since then, it has never left us. Instead, it has multiplied, moved to new pots, and traveled from the living room to the dining room, from the kitchen window to the bathroom that gets light. In short, it is everywhere, and in every corner it seems to say: "Here I am, keeping you company."

If there is one word to define it, it is "grateful," as it asks for almost nothing, just a little light and a little water from time to time, and it responds with admirable tenacity. Its leaves, which are fleshy and rounded, always seem freshly polished, yet it is not showy. It does not produce bright flowers, and its greatness lies in that green constancy.

For my mom, calling it the money plant has never been about the superstition of attracting material wealth. I believe for her, it is the plant that pays dividends in serene beauty, as every new bud that appears is an interest earned. Its abundance is not measured in bills but in the little piece of forest it brings to our home.

This plant has become a silent witness to our routine. It sees the rushed mornings and the calm afternoons, it is the green background in my video calls, and it is often the detail that adorns the shelf of family photos.

In such a loud world, there is a profound relief in caring for something that asks for so little and gives so much in return. It is not dramatic; it does not wilt from a simple oversight. It is a faithful and generous plant that has taught us that true abundance lies in simplicity, in what endures gracefully and without exaggerated effort.

When I look at those pots, I do not just see decorative plants. I see heritage and the story of our home, which has always had this green thread tying everything together. Perhaps the real wealth this plant has given us is precisely the richness of the everyday, and that it has become another member of the family. Perhaps that is why it will keep multiplying in our corners, to remind us that the most valuable things are often those that make the least noise.

Una planta como miembro más de la familia

Hay presencias en una casa que tejen su propia historia entre los días y no son precisamente personas ni mascotas, pero aun así tienen un nombre, un espacio y, sobre todo, un significado. En mi casa, esa presencia son varias macetas de Peperomia obtusifolia, o como siempre la ha llamado mi mamá: "la planta del dinero".

No recuerdo con exactitud cuándo llegó por primera vez. Creo que fue uno de esos traspasos silenciosos que terminó echando raíces en nuestra vida, pero lo que sí recuerdo es que desde entonces, nunca nos ha abandonado. En su lugar, se ha multiplicado, se ha mudado de maceta y ha viajado de la sala al comedor, de la ventana de la cocina al baño que tiene luz. En fin, está por todas partes, y en cada rincón parece decir: "Aquí estoy, acompañándoles".

Si hay una palabra para definirla es agradecida, pues no pide casi nada, solo un poco de luz y un poco de agua de vez en cuando, y ella responde con una tenacidad admirable. Sus hojas, que son carnosas y redondeadas, siempre parecen recién lustradas y, sin embargo, no es ostentosa; no da flores vistosas y su grandeza está en esa constancia verde.

Para mi mamá, llamarla planta del dinero nunca ha tenido que ver con la superstición de atraer riqueza material. Creo que para ella es la planta que da dividendos en belleza serena, pues cada nuevo brote que asoma es un interés ganado. Su abundancia no se mide en billetes, sino en el pedacito de bosque que trae a nuestra casa.

Esta planta se ha vuelto un testigo silencioso de nuestra rutina. Ve las mañanas de prisas y las tardes tranquilas, es el fondo verde en mis videollamadas y muchas veces es el detalle que adorna el estante de las fotos familiares.

En un mundo tan estruendoso, hay un alivio profundo en cuidar algo que pide tan poco y da tanto a cambio. No es dramática, no se marchita por un despiste; es una planta fiel y generosa que nos ha enseñado que la verdadera abundancia está en lo simple, en lo que perdura con gracia y sin esfuerzos exagerados.

Cuando miro esas macetas, no veo solo plantas decorativas. Veo herencia y veo la historia de nuestro hogar, que siempre ha tenido este hilo verde uniéndolo todo. Quizás la verdadera riqueza que esta planta nos ha dado es precisamente la riqueza de lo cotidiano y el haberse convertido en un miembro más de la familia. Quizás por eso seguirá multiplicándose en nuestros rincones, para recordarnos que las cosas más valiosas a menudo son las que menos ruido hacen.
