Coastal Sentry (Splinterlands)
Today I will be drawing in my old sketchbook. It’s not of very good quality, it’s somewhat deteriorated and the pages are stained, but I think it’s still a good place to capture any idea that comes to mind. I’ll be drawing with colored pencils, and I’ll also be completing a double page, which is always something that brings joy.
The inspiration for today’s drawing comes from the vast universe of fantastic creatures in Splinterlands. As you know, I really enjoy drawing these kinds of supernatural beings and monsters, but above all, I like to give them my own style.
The creature I selected today is the card called Coastal Sentry, which stands out for its blend of beauty and power. It’s a mermaid that looks both beautiful, strong, and powerful.
Hoy estaré dibujando en mi viejo sketchbook. No es de muy buena calidad, está algo deteriorado y las hojas manchadas, pero creo que sigue siendo un buen lugar para plasmar cualquier idea que me venga a la cabeza. Estaré dibujando con lápices de colores y además estaré completando una página doble, que siempre es algo que alegra.
La inspiración del dibujo de hoy viene del vasto universo de criaturas fantásticas de Splinterlands. Como saben, disfruto mucho dibujar este tipo de seres sobrenaturales y monstruos, pero sobre todo me gusta darles mi estilo propio.
La criatura seleccionada por hoy es la carta llamada Coastal Sentry, que destaca por esa mezcla de belleza y poder. Es una sirena que se ve a la vez hermosa, fuerte y poderosa.
I started by sketching the character. I want to create a sunrise scene: in the background, a ship has fallen victim to the fierce bite of this mermaid, and in the water only the trail of blood from the former crew remains. I think it’s quite an ambitious drawing for my level, but I’ll try to do my best. The mermaid will be submerged up to half her neck, showing part of her tail but especially her fins. I’ll also give her a predator’s smile, macabre, showing her teeth. What will stand out the most is her long and beautiful hair. I’ll use blue and green colors for the mermaid and her body.
Comencé haciendo mi boceto del personaje. Quiero hacer una escena de un amanecer: al fondo, un barco ha sido víctima de la feroz mordida de esta sirena, y en el agua solo queda el rastro de sangre de los antiguos tripulantes. Creo que es un dibujo bastante ambicioso para mi nivel, pero estaré tratando de hacer lo mejor posible. La sirena estará sumergida hasta la mitad del cuello, y mostrará parte de su cola pero sobre todo sus aletas. Además, le haré una sonrisa de depredador, macabra mostrando los dientes. Lo que más va a destacar es su larga y hermosa cabellera. Utilizaré colores azules y verdes para la sirena y su cuerpo.
I started coloring the character, specifically beginning with the hair. Although I had already made the blood stains earlier, for the hair I applied layers in different shades of blue and purple, with some highlights in green and yellow. I used yellow because I wanted to create the reflection of the sun on her skin at sunrise. With a black pen, I emphasized some lines in the darker areas to better define the depth and silhouette of my character.
Comencé coloreando el personaje, específicamente por el cabello. Aunque ya había hecho las manchas de sangre anteriormente, para el cabello fui dando capas en distintos tonos de azules y morado, con algunos reflejos en verde y amarillo. Amarillo porque quiero hacer el reflejo del sol sobre su piel al amanecer. Con un bolígrafo negro fui acentuando algunas líneas en las zonas más oscuras para que se definiera mejor la profundidad y la silueta de mi personaje.
For the skin, I followed the same process, starting with a light blue base for the whole body. Then I added the reflections of yellow light, and with darker blue and purple tones I gave volume to certain areas of the drawing where the sun’s rays don’t reach. I also used a touch of red on the cheeks and on the character’s lips.
Para la piel realicé el mismo proceso, empezando por dar una pequeña base de azul claro para todo el cuerpo. Después añadí los reflejos de la luz amarilla, y con un azul y un morado más oscuros di volumen en ciertas zonas del dibujo donde no llegan los rayos del sol. También usé un poco de rojo en las mejillas y en los labios del personaje.
For the water, I used all the blue and green colors I had, and I also added yellow highlights. I wanted to create the sensation of depth as it moved away from the character, although I think I didn’t quite achieve it. I tried to do so by placing the darker colors in the background, the more intense blues mixed with some black, and closer to us, the lighter shades of blue with some green reflections. I don’t completely dislike the sea, but I think it’s something that can be greatly improved.
Para el agua utilicé todos los colores azules y verdes que tenía, también le agregué luces amarillas. Quería lograr la sensación de profundidad a medida que se alejaba del personaje, aunque creo que no lo logré. Traté de hacerlo colocando los colores más oscuros al fondo, los azules más intensos mezclados con algo de negro, y, acercándose más a nosotros, los tonos más claros de azul con algunos reflejos en verde. No me desagrada del todo el mar, pero creo que es algo muy, muy mejorable.
What I liked the least was the sky, I wanted to make a sunrise where the sun broke through the clouds, and the yellow of the sunlight reflected on the surfaces, but I did not know how, the same thing always happens to me with black backgrounds, they end up looking unpolished and messy. But the important thing was to finish my drawing, not to leave it halfway, and even more important was to complete a double page, the one I share with you from my sketchbook. Without a doubt I enjoyed the process, and since it is such a deteriorated sketchbook, I allow myself to make mistakes and experiment.
Lo que menos me gustó fue el cielo, quería hacer un amanecer donde el sol rompiera entre las nubes, y el amarillo de la luz solar se reflejara en las superficies, pero no supe cómo, siempre me pasa lo mismo con los fondos negros, además de que quedan poco pulidos y desastrosos. Pero lo importante fue terminar mi dibujo, no dejarlo a medias, y más importante aún fue terminar una página doble, esta que comparto con ustedes de mi sketchbook. Sin dudas disfruté el proceso, y al ser un sketchbook tan deteriorado, me permito cometer errores y experimentar.
