¡Qué susto, madre!
Imagina que vas caminando sola/o por el campo. Avanzas por un camino arenoso, donde los silencios se sienten como un bálsamo, y mientras te entregas a ese disfrute casi puedes tararear en tu mente una melodía. Tus pasos marcarán el ritmo suave, relajante.
Pero de pronto... miras a un lado...
y ves este árbol.
No pasan dos segundos y escuchas en esa dirección un sonido, como si alguien te llamara... ¿desde dentro del árbol? 😟

¡Qué susto, madre! Ya estaba mi corazón acelerándose y a la vez, para no pensar mal, se me ocurrió que era alguien conocido, que al verme venir por el camino se escondió para bromear.
Entonces vi al culpable en el árbol de al lado. 😂
Qué risa me dio. Escucha la llamada tu misma/o.
Este es el Bobito Grande 😄 (La Sagra’s Flycatcher en inglés).
Su nombre científico es Myiarchus sagrae. De tamaño mediano, esta curiosa ave es endémica del Caribe (Cuba, las Bahamas y las Islas Caimán). Leí que aparece en algunos relatos como mensajero y guardián discreto.
Discreto sí era, porque me costó bastante trabajo verlo.
La fuente que consulté también mencionaba que su canto melancólico se asocia con presagios o confidencias de la naturaleza. Ya en esa parte estoy perdida; no sé lo que este Bobito quiso decirme. Lo que sí sé es que me sobresaltó y luego me hizo reír como una boba también 🤣… un hermoso recuerdo para atesorar.
Durante el tiempo que pasé este fin de año junto a mi familia por parte de padre, pude fotografiar varias veces a este lindo pajarito.
Aquí estaba en un matorral cerca de una planta de ajíes picantes que descubrí entre la maleza, pegada a una cerca… en terreno de nadie. Y, por supuesto, recolecté algunos, porque preparados con aceite y vinagre son ideales para condimentar sopas, frijoles y asados. Ese ají tiene un nombre muy particular…
Imagine yourself walking alone through the countryside. You move along a sandy path, where the silences feel like a balm, and as you surrender to that delight you can almost hum a melody in your mind. Your steps will set the gentle, soothing rhythm.
But suddenly… you look to one side…
And you see this tree.
No sooner than two seconds pass when you hear a sound coming from that direction, as if someone were calling you… from inside the tree? 😟

What a fright, goodness! My heart was already racing and, at the same time, so as not to think the worst, it occurred to me that it might be someone I knew, who, seeing me coming along the path, had hidden to play a prank on me.
Then I saw the culprit in the tree next to it. 😂
It made me laugh so much. Listen to the call yourself.
This is La Sagra's flycatcher (Bobito Grande in Spanish 😄).
Its scientific name is Myiarchus sagrae. Of medium size, this curious bird is endemic to the Caribbean (Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands). I read that it appears in some tales as a messenger and discreet guardian. Discreet it certainly was, for it took me quite some effort to see it.
The source I consulted also mentioned that its melancholy call is associated with omens or confidences of nature. At that point I was rather lost; I do not know what this Bobito (its name translates roughly as ‘little fool’) wished to tell me. What I do know is that it startled me and then made me laugh like a fool as well 🤣… a beautiful memory to cherish.
During the time I spent at the end of the year with my father’s side of the family, I was able to photograph this lovely little bird several times.
Here it was in a thicket near a plant of hot chillies that I discovered among the weeds, right up against a fence… on no one’s land. And of course I gathered some, because prepared with oil and vinegar they are ideal for seasoning soups, beans, roasts. That chilli has a very particular name...
