Alphabets and divination systems always appear in an unvarying order. When their symbols also name objects, myths surrounding those objects can be explored; their meanings compared. Ancient letters contain evolving attributes determined by the placement in the pattern. Although the alphabets of the different cultures I studied emphasize some qualities over others, they all follow a common pattern.1 The named and ordered symbols reveal an unfolding tale of creation: A Genesis of birth, growth, death and a return to the world of the Mother. They also hide a number magic. As a properly spelled pattern, each symbol placed in order, they once promised a return into the circle of time. They hide a soul journey as well as travel through the wealth of a material world.
