Nosy Nora

Nora wasn't just the hottest in the department, she was loud and obviously a busybody. Always busy, especially with issues she had no business getting herself involved in. People's love relationships were her top concern. She took it upon herself to stick her nose in it, and always had the latest gist about the crack in these relationships. She was “single to stupor”, as the class had nicknamed her, yet, whenever it had to do with the love life of others, she always had one or two unsolicited advice to give.

“Girls, hot gist dey.” She said excitedly, as she dashed into the lecture hall that afternoon. Nora's strong Avanti perfume had romanced our nostrils, announcing her arrival, even before we heard her usual opening line. These were Nora's typical words whenever she was about to divulge the hot gists she heard from God knows where. Unfortunately, we were too busy to give her the kind of attention she would have loved. The thought of Professor Larry’s course had us all in fear, especially after he had promised to unleash terror on us when he was privy to the fact that our class representative had submitted his name as one of those who requested us to grease his palm before we could even smell a ‘D’ grade.
After an escape from the doom professor Larry had cooked for us all, we didn't need to be told to pay the night class a visit. We had no intention of sleeping in the hostel that night, so we were battle ready and prepared to fight even the mosquitoes that whispered love songs to our ears in the lecture halls where we planned to spend the night reading.
“You girls are leaving without me?” Nora asked, sounding very serious and interested in joining us for the night. We all made a quick glance at her and laughed in an uncontrolled manner.
“When did you start going to night class?”
“Well, there's always a first time, isn't it?”
Before we got to say something else, she had dashed in and got her bags to join us.
That night, the singing mosquitoes visited, just like we had envisaged. We beat ourselves repeatedly, but it didn't help. Nora, who sat beside us grew very restless as the mosquito bites got even worse.
“I need some air,” Nora announced, as she got up heading outside. I joined her too, but to ease myself.
The light in professor Larry's office was on. This was very strange, because the central power control was always turned off at the close of work. This was a university policy. There were shadows reflecting through the window, and that looked quite suspicious. No one could be there in the office by 10pm. It was probably nothing.
“Did you see that? Nora asked me, sounding very curious.
“It's probably nothing,” I dismissed her suspicion and headed back to the lecture hall. Nora refused to join me. she stood there, still observing.

She made hurried steps towards the office and stopped right in front. There was the main entrance door which gave access to a number of offices in the building . She turned the knob and moved in stealthily. There were whispers. She was certain she heard them, but just wanted to double check. While snooping, her phone began to ring. She began to struggle hard to remove it from the pocket of her tight jean trousers, and she didn't realise that someone was behind her. A loud thud went on her head, and she fell flat.
“I think I know this face, Sir”. The secretary told the professor.
“ Don't you think you were a little too fast in striking her head”
Both of them tried to turn her over so they could move her body to the office to uncover her identity. Her loud sneeze interrupted the silence that had lingered in the office for minutes. She was panting with fear in her eyes, as she made to raise her body from the floor. Professor Larry walked in and her eyes widened in fear.
“Young woman, are you some security official on the night watch?” The professor inquired, looking stern.
Her heart was pounding so fast that she was tongue tied for some seconds.
“Can't you talk?” He asked again, this time sounding even more terrifying.
“I saw shadows and wanted to know who they were,” She said, stuttering and shaking.
My friends and I had grown a little weary from reading and had paused a while to chit chat. Our first concern was Nora's disappearance. Just before I could tell them the point I left her, she ran into the lecture hall breathing heavily. Her entire body was covered in sweat.we could see blood stains on her head, which heightened our concern. We tried to get her to talk to us about what had happened, but she wouldn't utter a word.
Nora had stayed quiet for days around the hostel. The only time she stepped out was just before the exams, and would return immediately after. After about a week, she was able to tell us all that had transpired that night. We were torn between serious laughter and a bit of pity for her, especially because the strike on her head got her seriously wounded. We didn't need to prep her about minding her business. The bruise on her head was enough to put her in check.
