Let’s talk about what has recently happened in Cuba in the realm of cryptocurrencies. There has been quite a stir with several news stories in the national context, including national television, which undoubtedly remains one of the main sources of information in the country—though I personally only watch football. If you’re not aware of this or it raises questions for you, keep reading so you’re not left in the dark, and so you can also share your opinion with me. I’ll give you mine without delving into politics, even though everything related to Cuba always seems to involve it.
Cryptocurrencies in Cuban Media
For several weeks now, we’ve seen how Cuba has become entangled in the topic of cryptocurrencies. If you’re Cuban, you know that nothing happens in Cuba without a purpose or something more being planned. It all started with the announcement that the topic of cryptocurrencies and their use in Cuba would be discussed on the most political program on national television:
La Mesa Redonda.
I shared my opinion about this program three weeks ago on my
X profile. In summary, the program merely warned about the use of cryptocurrencies and barely mentioned any practical uses or advantages for Cubans. Fortunately, a week later, the topic was revisited on the program

In less time, they said more than La Mesa Redonda, although, in my opinion, it was still insufficient for what Cubans needed. In 45 minutes, you cannot adequately educate people on such a complex topic, especially when considering the average audience of these programs. But that wasn’t the end of it. So much noise couldn’t be for nothing.
The Cryptoasset License in Cuba
A few days ago, a friend messaged me on WhatsApp with the news that a foreign company had obtained a license to manage cryptoassets in Cuba. My prediction was starting to come true, although I didn’t think it would happen so quickly. The Central Bank of Cuba, through a resolution, granted a digital asset provider license to a company in Lithuania to manage cryptoassets and currencies in Cuba. In summary, this company will safeguard and manage assets through a platform they either create or already have, with the ability to carry out operations between cryptocurrencies and legal tender in Cuba (Cuban pesos, MLC, etc.). This makes me think they will act as a remittance service to enter the cryptocurrency remittance market, which has existed in Cuba for years. Especially when we look at
the company’s website, which inspires no confidence—at least not for me. It mentions that it is still in Beta, even though it seems to have existed since 2022.
Questions and Alternatives
Many questions remain unanswered about how this company will actually operate, the regulations it might impose on those in Cuba, and how this license will function in practice. For now, we’ll have to wait, although I’m sure I won’t use their services, especially since there are already so many tools created by Cubans for Cubans that facilitate the use of cryptocurrencies in the country and their exchange. Among the few good things I can take away from this is that companies like
Coinex, which have remained loyal to the Cuban market, might be able to obtain a license to operate in the country, facilitating access to cryptocurrencies for Cubans. Another positive is that more people might become interested in using cryptocurrencies in Cuba and benefit from them—from learning how to obtain them without spending their low salaries, as is possible with Hive, to paying for products in almost any online store like Amazon and having them delivered to their doorstep.
There’s still a lot to see before we can know how this story will end. For those of us who have been in this world for years, all we can do is continue educating and creating tools that help Cubans. Hablemos de lo que ha sucedido recientemente en Cuba en el ámbito de las criptomonedas. Poco no ha sido el revuelto de varias noticias en el contexto nacional, como lo es la televisión nacional, que sin dudas sigue siendo uno de los mayores difusores de información en el país, por mucho que yo solo vea el futbol y poco. Si no estás enterado de esto o te causa duda, sigue leyendo para que no estés en el limbo y además puedas darme tu opinión. Yo les daré la mía sin entrar en el tema político, por mucho que siempre envuelva a todo lo relacionado con Cuba.
Criptomonedas en los medios cubanos
Desde hace varias semanas hemos visto como Cuba se ha visto envuelta en todo el tema de las criptomonedas y si eres cubano sabes que no se hace algo en Cuba, sin una finalidad o algo más está por suceder. Todo comenzó con la noticia de que se trataría el tema de las criptomonedas y su uso en Cuba en el programa más político que existe en la televisión nacional:

Mi opinión sobre lo que fue este programa ya la airee hace tres semanas en mi
perfil de X. En resumen, solo se advirtió de su uso y no se mencionó casi ningún uso real o ventajas de las criptomonedas para los cubanos. Por suerte, una semana después se volvió a tocar el tema en el programa

En menos tiempo, dijeron más que en la Mesa Redonda, aunque sigue siendo poco a mi consideración para lo que necesitan los cubanos. En 45 minutos no puedes educar lo suficiente sobre un tema tan complejo y más si pensamos en el público promedio de estos programas. También dejé mi opinión con más detalles sobre este programa en mi

Pero todo no quedaba ahí. Tanto ruido no podía ser en vano.
La licencia de criptoactivos en Cuba
Hace unos días me escribe una amiga por WhatsApp con la noticia de que una empresa extranjera había adquirido una licencia de manejo de criptoactivos en Cuba. Ya se iba confirmando mi premonición, aunque no pensé que fuese tan rápido. El Banco Central de Cuba, mediante una resolución le otorgaba una licencia de proveedor de activos digitales a una empresa en Lituania para manejar criptoactivos y divisas en Cuba. Lo más importante de esta resolución lo puedes ver en la siguiente imagen, pero puedes leerla por completo

En resumen, esta empresa custodiará y administrará activos desde la plataforma que creen o que ya tengan para ello con la posibilidad de realizar operaciones entre criptomonedas y monedas de curso legal en Cuba (pesos cubanos, MLC, etc). Esto solo me hace pensar que actuaran como una remesadora para entrar en el mercado de las remesas mediante criptomonedas que hace años existe en Cuba. Sobre todo sí vemos
la web de dicha empresa, que no da ninguna confianza o al menos no a mí. Se menciona que aún está en Beta y eso que parece existir desde 2022.
Interrogantes y alternativas
Quedan muchas interrogantes sin resolver sobre como funcionara realmente esta empresa, las regulaciones que puede traer a quienes están en Cuba y el funcionamiento real de esta licencia. De momento queda esperar, aunque estoy seguro de que no utilizaré sus servicios, existiendo ya tantas herramientas para cubanos y creadas por cubanos que facilitan el uso de las criptomonedas en el país y su intercambio. Entre las pocas cosas buenas que puedo sacar de esto, está que compañías como
Coinex que se han mantenido fieles al mercado cubanos puedan gestionar una licencia que los avale en el país para facilitar el acceso a las criptomonedas a los cubanos. Otra es que mas personas se interesen por el uso de las criptomonedas en Cuba y puedan beneficiarse de ellas. Desde como obtenerlas sin tener que gastar su bajo salario como se puede en Hive, hasta como pagar por un producto en casi cualquier tienda online como Amazon y que llegue hasta la puerta de tu casa.
