TRABRENNBAHN KARLSHORST
Finally I found the time to test my new 550nm infrared pass filter a bit more. Some things are a bit strange compared to other filters. More about that below.
So I set out today at noon in bright sunshine with the Nikon D70 converted to full light spectrum, the Nikkor 17-38/2.8 and said 550nm filter. My way led me past Karlshorst station, the former horse station, to the Karlshorst harness racing track.
Endlich fand ich heute die Zeit mein neues 550nm Infrarot Pass Filter etwas ausgiebiger zu testen. Einiges ist, im Vergleich zu anderen Filtern, etwas merkwürdig. Dazu weiter unten mehr.
Ich zog also heute Mittag bei strahlendem Sonnenschein mit der auf volles Lichtspektrum umgebauten Nikon D70, dem Nikkor 17-38/2,8 und besagtem 550nm Filter los. Mein Weg führte mich vorbei am Bahnhof Karlshorst, dem ehemaligen Pferdebahnhof zur Trabrennbahn Karlshorst.
The first picture shows the former horse station. As the name suggests, in the early days of the racecourse the horses were brought here by railway trains. The Karlshorst racecourse, an obstacle course in its early years, was built at the end of the 19th century. From 1862, the facility was used by the military and as an alternative track for the Charlottenburg obstacle course. The first official race took place in 1884. After the obstacle course lost its importance because the horses were transported by lorries or in trailers, the building was home to the Deutsche Reichsbahn's Starkstrommeisterei Ost until the end of the GDR. After reunification, the railway sold the building. In the meantime, the former horse station is home to an organic market.
The first version of the image shows the version after changing the input profile in Darktable from RGB to Infrared BGR. The second version is the image as taken by the camera.
Das erste Bild zeigt den ehemaligen Pferdebahnhof. Wie der Name es erahnen lässt, wurden hier in den Anfangstagen der Rennbahn die Pferde mit Eisenbahnzügen gebracht. Die Rennbahn Karlshorst, in den ersten Jahren eine Hindernissbahn, wurde Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts gebaut. Seit 1862 wurde die Anlage vom Militär und als Ausweichstrecke der Charlottenburger Hindernisbahn genutzt. Das erste offizielle Rennen fand 1884 statt. Nachdem der Pfredbahnhof an Bedeutung verloren hatte weil die Pferde mit LKW's oder in Anhängern befördert wurden, war in dem Gebäude bis zum Ende der DDR die Starkstrommeisterei Ost der Deutschen Reichsbahn untergebracht. Nach der Wende verkaufte die Bahn das Gebäude. Mittlerweile ist ein Biomarkt im ehemaligen Pferdenahnhof beheimatet.
Die erste Version des Bildes zeigt die Version nach der Änderung des Eingabeprofils in Darktable von RGB auf Infrarot BGR. Die zweite Version ist das Bild so wie es die Kamera aufgenommen hat.
There is a memorial to Hermann Duncker in front of the horse station. Today's Treskowalle was named after him until the early 1990s. Duncker was a Berlin politician and mayor of the city. He lived from 1817 to 1893.
Vor dem Pferdbahnhof steht ein Denkmal für Hermann Duncker. Nach diesem war die heutige Treskowalle bis Anfang der 1990er Jahre benannt. Duncker war Berliner Politiker und Bürgermeister der Stadt. Er lebte von 1817 bis 1893.
On the other side of the street is the northern entrance to the Karlshorst harness racing track. Converted into a trotting track on the orders of the then Soviet city commander Bersarin. The Karlshorst trotting track was the only trotting track in the GDR. After reunification, there were two race days per week. The survival of the racecourse seemed assured. Since the 2000s, the racecourse has been less and less busy. Many of the historic buildings are falling into disrepair. If there hadn't been several horses on the track, one could have thought it was a lost place.
Auf der anderen Straßenseite befindet sich der nördliche Eingang zur Trabrennbahn Karlshorst. Auf Befehl des damaligen sowjetischen Stadtkommandanten Bersarin zur Trabrennbahn umgebaut. Die Trabrennbahn Karlshorst war die einzige Trabrennbahn in der DDR. Nach der Wende gab es zwei Renntage pro Woche. Das Überleben der Rennbahn schien gesichert. Seit den 2000er Jahren ist auf der Rennbahn immer weniger Betrieb. Viele der historischen Gebäude verfallen immer mehr. Wenn nicht mehrere Pferde auf der Anlage unterwegs gewesen wären könnte man meinen es handelt sich um einen Lost Place.
Then, in the image processing, I noticed some oddities. Darktable offers the possibility to change the input profile to infrared BGR. In this case, the red and blue colour channels are swapped. In these images, parts of the image with a high infrared content, i.e. trees, bushes and grass, are orange. If, on the other hand, I swap the channels with the channel mixer, these parts of the image are red or magenta. At the moment I cannot say what the reason for this is. On the one hand, the filter is new, on the other hand, Darktable was recently updated.
In der Bildbearbeitung fielen mir dann einige Merkwürdigkeiten auf. Darktable bietet die Möglichkeit das Eingabeprofil auf Infrarot BGR zu ändern. Dabei werden der rote und der blaue Farbkanal getauscht. In diesen Bildern sind Bildteile mit hohem Infrarot Anteil, also Bäume, Sträucher und Gras, orange. Wenn ich den Kanaltausch hingegen mit dem Kanalmixer vornehme sind diese Bildteile rot bzw. magenta. Was der Grund dafür ist vermag ich im Moment nicht zu sagen. Zum Einen ist das Filter neu, zum Anderen wurde vor Kurzem Darktable aktualisiert.
This can be seen well in these three pictures. Picture 1 is the unprocessed picture, picture 2 with the changed input profile and picture 3 with manual channel exchange.
In diesen drei Bildern ist das gut zu erkennen. Bild 1 ist das unbearbeitete Bild, Bild 2 mit dem geänderten Eingabeprofil und Bild 3 mit manuellem Kanaltausch.
The intensity of the colours depends on the intensity of the infrared radiation and the correct exposure. I basically take 4 to 5 pictures for each motif, each with a difference of one aperture. On the display of the camera, you can't even begin to see whether the exposure is right for infrared photos. I then select the right picture on the computer. In difficult cases, I combine several pictures into one HDR. The dynamic range of the old D70 is not particularly large. And with infrared images it often decreases even more.
Die Intensität der Farben hängt von der Intensität der Infrarotstrahlung und der richtigen Belichtung ab. Ich nehme grundsätzlich für jedes Motiv 4 bis 5 Aufnahmen mit je einer Blende Unterschied auf. Auf dem Display der Kamera kann man bei Infrarotfotos nicht ansatzweise erkennen, ob die Belichtung passt. Am Computer wähle ich dann das passende Bild aus. Bei schwierigen Fällen rechne ich mehrere Bilder zu einem HDR zusammen. Der Dynamikumfang der alten D70 ist nicht besonders groß. Und bei Infrarotaufnahmen nimmt dieser oftmal noch weiter ab.

Auf dem Rückweg habe ich den ehemaligen Pferdebahnhof nochmal von der anderen Straßenseite aufgenommen.
