When after almost 6 hours of travel we arrived at the town of El Chaltén, my cousin and I were almost desperate to go for a walk somewhere. And that is why we had gone there: this small town in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina, is called "the national capital of trekking" because it is full of trails to walk and enjoy its landscapes. Of course we didn't want to start with a complicated trail because we didn't have that much time or experience either, so we started our adventure in a fairly short one and it's the one I'll share with you on our Wednesday Walk. Cuando después de casi 6 horas de viaje llegamos al pueblo de El Chaltén, mi prima y yo estábamos casi desesperadas por ir a caminar a algún lado. Y es que para eso habíamos ido hasta allá: este pequeño pueblo en la provincia de Santa Cruz, Argentina, es denominado "la capital nacional del trekking" porque está lleno de senderos para recorrer y disfrutar de sus paisajes. Por supuesto no queríamos empezar con un sendero complicado porque tampoco teníamos tanto tiempo ni experiencia, así que iniciamos nuestra aventura en uno bastante corto y es el que compartiré con ustedes en nuestro Wednesday Walk. As this place is a small town, everything is close so we quickly got to our hostel, settled in and immediately figured out what we could do before it got dark. The good thing is that in the summer it is daylight until almost 10 PM, so we still had several hours of daylight ahead of us. In the hostel it didn't take long for us to meet another traveler with the same desire to walk as us, so we had someone else in our walking team and that was the case until we left 😅.
Como este lugar es un pueblo pequeño, todo está cerca así que llegamos rápido a nuestro hostel, nos acomodamos e inmediatamente averiguamos qué podíamos hacer antes de que se hiciera de noche. Lo bueno es que en el verano es de día hasta casi las 10 PM, por lo que aún teníamos varias horas de luz por delante. En el hostel no tardamos mucho en conocer a otro viajero con las mismas ganas de caminar que nosotras asi que tuvimos a alguien más en nuestro equipo de caminantes y asi fue hasta que nos fuimos 😅.
As for starters, the locals recommended a short walk to get used to climbing the mountains. It was about getting to the Margarita viewpoint, which was at the entrance of one of the main trails of El Chaltén, the one that leads you to Laguna Torre. Supposedly it was only 1 km from where we were, but as the days went by I learned that these units of measurement should not be trusted because the distances were always longer than what they told us 😂.
Como para empezar, los lugareños nos recomendaron un paseo corto como para ir acostumbrandonos a subir las montañas. Se trataba de llegar hasta el mirador Margarita, el cual quedaba en la entrada de uno de los senderos principales del El Chaltén, el que te dirige hacia la Laguna Torre. Supuestamente quedaba solo a 1 km de donde estábamos, pero con el paso de los días aprendí en que no había que confiar en estas unidades de medida porque las distancias siempre fueron más largas que las que nos dijeron 😂.
The town of El Chaltén is only a few blocks away, so it is easy to get close to the periphery and after a bit of walking up the mountain, you can already have a panoramic view of the place. There are those who told us that the town has expanded a lot in recent years and I am not judging them, this place is beautiful ❤️.
El pueblo del El Chaltén solo tiene algunas cuadras a la redonda, por lo que es fácil acercarse a la periferia y después de un poco de caminata montaña arriba, ya podes tener una vista panorámica del lugar. Hay quienes nos dijeron que el pueblo se fue expandiendo mucho en los últimos años y no los juzgo, este lugar es hermoso ❤️.
It didn't take long for the path to get steep so our legs had to start making a real effort. I don't usually do physical activity regularly so this whole hiking trip was going to be a great challenge for me, and it was already showing from the first day. All that effort was worth it though because the scenery looked great and this was supposedly one of the easier hikes 😅.
El camino no tardó mucho en volverse empinado así que nuestras piernas tuvieron que empezar a hacer esfuerzo real. Yo no suelo hacer actividad física regularmente así que todo este viaje de caminatas iba a ser un gran desafío para mí, y ya lo fue demostrando desde el primer día. Sin embargo, todo ese esfuerzo valía la pena porque el paisaje se veía genial y supuestamente esta era una de las caminatas más fáciles 😅.
We will have walked for about half an hour from when we left the hostel until we reached the viewpoint. From this point you could see a river of a very light blue color and in the background the great Cerro Torre, one of the highest peaks of the mountain range in this area. To our bad luck, there was just concentrated cloudiness at the top of the mountain, but at least we could see it a bit 😅.
Habremos caminado alrededor de media hora desde que salimos del hostel hasta que llegamos al mirador. Desde este punto se podía ver un río de un color celeste muy claro y al fondo el gran cerro Torre, uno de los picos más altos de la cadena montañosa de esta área. Para nuestra mala suerte, justo había nubosidad concentrada en la cima de la montaña, pero al menos pudimos verlo un poco 😅.
The signage indicated that the great Laguna Torre was 9 km further on: this surprised me a bit because if the road had already been a bit rocky and steep up until now, what would we have left for later? For now, our journey for the day had ended up there, at the beautiful viewpoint where we stayed to rest for a while until it was time for a snack ❤️.
La cartelería indicaba que la gran Laguna Torre estaba a 9 km más adelante: esto me sorprendió un poco porque si el camino ya había sido un poco rocoso y empinado hasta ahora, qué nos quedaría para luego. Por el momento, nuestra travesía del día había finalizado hasta ahí, en el lindo mirador en donde nos quedamos a descansar un rato hasta que se hizo la hora de la merienda ❤️.
If you like hiking and walks (and you are passing through Argentina, of course), you cannot miss this place in the south of my country. It has trails for all tastes, ages and physical conditions. When we did this walk I had already been amazed by the landscapes, and that had not seen anything yet. Outdoor walks are always a good option to connect with nature, and thank you @tattoodjay for creating this space so we can share them with our #Hive friends ❤️.
Si te gusta el senderismo y los paseos (y estas de paso por Argentina, por supuesto), no podes perderte de este lugar al sur de mi país. Tiene senderos para todos los gustos, edades y estados físicos. Cuando hicimos esta caminata yo ya había quedado asombrada por los paisajes, y eso no había visto nada aún.
