One of the things that surprised me about Chile was the number of glaciers we saw along the way. This entire area was once frozen millions of years ago, and their remains still remain, adorning part of the Southern Highway. From a distance, these glaciers looked magnificent, but during the ride, we were able to find one that allowed us to get a closer look. It's the Hanging Glacier, which can be observed from a viewpoint that brings together a multitude of natural elements in one place ❤️.
Una de las cosas que me sorprendió de Chile es la cantidad de glaciares que pudimos ver en el camino. Toda esta zona supo estar congelada hace millones de años y aún quedan sus restos, adornando parte del tramo de la Carretera Austral. Desde lejos estos glaciares se veían geniales, pero durante el paseo pudimos encontrar uno que nos permitió verlo un poco más de cerca. Se trata del Vestisquero Colgante, pudiendo ser observado desde un mirador que reune un montón de elementos naturales en un mismo lugar ❤️.
Since we had arranged to find a campsite near this park the day before, it was 9 AM that day and we were already there, ready to begin our hike to the viewpoint. The entrance to this park cost us about $12, because Chileans know they have beautiful things to show, and that's why they charge for almost everything. Before starting, a guide explained the entire route, which we would complete in approximately four hours. We would reach the glacier viewpoint and then descend to the Iceberg Lagoon to see it from another angle.
Como el día anterior nos habíamos encargado de encontrar un camping cercano a este parque, ese día eran las 9 AM y ya estabamos ahí, listos para empezar nuestra caminata hasta el mirador. La entrada a este parque nos costó unos $12, porque los chilenos saben que tienen cosas hermosas que mostrar y por eso para casi todo te cobran. Antes de empezar, una guía nos explicó todo el recorrido, el cual completaríamos en unas cuatro horas aproximadamente. En él, llegaríamos hasta el mirador del glaciar y luego podríamos bajar hasta la Laguna de los témpanos para poder verlo desde otro ángulo.
Since it was a weekday and fairly early, we were lucky not to encounter many people along the way. This trek was quite short compared to what I'm used to. It was only about 3.5 km to reach the viewpoint, but in between there were quite a few climbs and wet rocks, so we had to be careful. Almost the entire trail ran through the forest, but along the way we could find small windows overlooking the Ventisquero River and the surrounding mountains.
Como era día de semana y bastante temprano, tuvimos la suerte de no encontrar a tanta gente en el camino. Este trekking era bastante corto a comparación de lo que yo estoy acostumbrada. Solo fueron unos 3,5 km hasta llegar al mirador, pero en el medio hubieron bastantes subidas y piedras húmedas, por lo que había que tener cuidado. Casi todo el sendero transcurrió dentro del bosque, pero en el camino pudimos encontrarnos con pequeñas ventanas hacia el Río Ventisquero y a las montañas del área.
Our day had started out somewhat cloudy, but by the time we reached the viewpoint, the sun rose just then. This gave us a view of beautiful, brilliant colors. From there, we could see the glacier and its unusual location, right between mountains that form a sort of "V." From it, a large waterfall cascaded into a lake, which then flowed into the Ventisquero River through the forest. Glacier, waterfall, mountains, river, lagoon, forest: all together in the same picture. Have you ever seen such a complete landscape 😃?
Nuestro día había empezado algo nublado, pero para cuando llegamos al mirador, salió el sol justo en ese momento. Esto hizo que tuvieramos una vista con unos colores brillantes hermosos. Desde ahí, se podía ver el glaciar y su curiosa ubicación, justo entre unas montañas que forman una especie de "V". Desde él, caía una gran cascada que desembocaba en un lago, que luego seguía su curso al Río Ventisquero entre el bosque. Glaciar, cascada, montañas, río, laguna, bosque: todo junto en la misma postal. ¿Habían visto algún paisaje tan completo alguna vez 😃?
At this viewpoint, there was a small sun shelter, which also served as the perfect place to leave my Worldmappin sticker. I was glad I could leave it there, because I thought I wouldn't find a suitable spot in the middle of nature. Now our badge has a privileged view of the Hanging Glacier. Lucky it.
En este mirador había un pequeño refugio para el sol, que además sirvió como lugar perfecto para dejar mi sticker de Worldmappin. Me alegré de poder dejarlo ahí, porque pensé que en medio de la naturaleza no iba a encontrar ningún lugar adecuado. Ahora nuestra insignia tiene una vista privilegiada al Ventisquero Colgante. Afortunado él.
After having our healthy lunch at the viewpoint (chips, water, and an apple), we went down from there and took the detour just past the bridge. This took us to the shore of Laguna de los Témpanos. Well, there weren't any icebergs there, but the color was incredible, as was the glacier. From the viewpoint, you're 2 km away from it, the closest you can get, at least for simple people like us.
Después de tener nuestro saludable almuerzo en el mirador (papas fritas, agua y una manzana), bajamos de ahí y tomamos el desvío que estaba justo después del puente. Este nos llevó hasta la orilla de la Laguna de los Témpanos. Bueno, no había ningún témpano en ella, pero el color se veía increíble y el glaciar también. Estando en el mirador estas a 2 km de él, lo más cerca que se puede llegar a él, al menos para las personas simples como nosotros.
From the lagoon, you could also take a boat ride for about $18. This ride brought you a little closer to the glacier over the water, but we didn't think we'd get a more incredible view than the one we had from the lookout point. I think this ride was more recommended for older people who can't climb to the top and want a bit more of an adventure. We'd had enough 😅.
Desde la laguna también se podía realizar un paseo en bote por unos $18. Este paseo te acercaba un poco más al glaciar sobre el agua, pero no creímos obtener una vista más increíble que la que tuvimos desde el mirador. Pienso que este paseo era más recomendable para las personas mayores que no pueden subir hasta arriba y quieren tener algo más de aventura. Nosotros ya habíamos tenido suficiente 😅.
I really enjoyed visiting Queulat National Park. As for amenities, there weren't many, but at least they had clean bathrooms and several guides to guide you through everything. There was also no internet connection or Wi-Fi, so we understood why we had to buy the ticket in advance. This trip is perfect for a half-day trip because it was only 2 PM and we had already seen the most beautiful parts of this area. We still had some free time to get to our next stop, after having our eyes watered with the unique scenery ❤️.
Me gustó bastante visitar el Parque Nacional Queulat. En cuanto a servicios, no habían tantos pero al menos tenían baños limpios y habían varios guías que te orientaban con todo. Tampoco había nada de señal de internet ni de Wi-Fi, por lo que ahí entendímos el por qué de comprar el ticket con anticipación. Este paseo es perfecto para hacerlo en medio día, porque apenas eran las 2 PM y ya habíamos visto lo más hermoso de esta zona. Todavía teniamos tiempo libre para llegar hasta nuestra siguiente parada, después de habernos llenado los ojos con un paisaje único ❤️.
