We saw so many beautiful things in Chile, but it seemed like there were never enough. It's not for nothing that people say Patagonia is so beautiful: it's full of incredible places. One of them is Puerto Varas, a city we happened upon on our impromptu trip. While we were deciding whether to stay the night there or in Puerto Montt in search of the best rates, we took the opportunity to stroll along the waterfront. And in the background, the imposing Osorno Volcano loomed, somewhat shyly between the clouds ❤️.
Muchas fueron las cosas hermosas que vimos en Chile, pero parecía que nunca terminaban de ser suficientes. No por nada dicen que su Patagonia es tan hermosa: esta llena de rincones increíbles. Uno de ellos es Puerto Varas, una ciudad que nos quedó de pasada en nuestro viaje improvisado. Mientras decidíamos si nos quedábamos a pasar la noche ahí o en Puerto Montt en busca de las mejores tarifas, aprovechamos para pasear un poco en la costanera. Y en el fondo del paisaje, se asomaba, algo tímido entre nubes, el imponente Volcán Osorno ❤️.
Our stay in Hornopirén gave us plenty of time to rest. While we waited for the mechanic to service the little car, we relaxed a bit for two nights in the same accommodation, after being on the move constantly. When it was finally ready, we resumed our road trip, which was already very close to its end. Being on the verge of completing the Carretera Austral was exciting.
Nuestra estancia en Hornopirén nos sirvió oara descansar bastante. Mientras esperábamos que el mecánico haga el mantenimiento al pequeño autito, nos relajamos un poco dos noches en el mismo alojamiento, después de estar moviendonos constantemente. Cuando al fin estuvo listo, retomamos nuestro roadtrip que ya estaba muy cerca del final. Estar a punto de completar el objetivo de terminar de recorrer la Carretera Austral era emocionante.
Reviewing the map and the routes we could take, we saw that the most direct route north included another ferry. But there was also an alternate route we could take, a bit longer, but along the coast on a gravel road. I'm not sure why we decided to take that option, detouring off Route 7 and taking Highway 69 and then Highway 225, but it took us directly to Puerto Varas.
Revisando un poco el mapa y las rutas que podíamos tomar, vimos que la más directa hacia el norte incluía otro ferry más. Pero tambié existía una ruta alterna que podíamos tomar, un poco más larga, pero recorriendo la costa en una calle de ripio. No estoy segura de por qué decidimos tomar esa opción, desviándonos de la Ruta 7 y tomando la 69 y luego la 225, pero eso nos llevó directamente hasta Puerto Varas.
This stretch took us almost all day, and it was already getting dark, so we stopped there to look for accommodation. We were already very close to Puerto Montt, our last stop, so we also looked for a place to sleep there. While we waited for answers from the accommodations, we took a walk along the city's coast, from where we could see the great Osorno Volcano.
Hacer este tramo nos tomó caai todo el día y ya estaba atardeciendo, así que hicimos una parada ahí para buscar alojamiento. Ya estabamos muy cerca de Puerto Montt, nuestra última parada, así que también buscamos un lugar para dormir ahí. Mientras esperábamos las respuestas de los alojamientos, dimos un paseo por la costa de la ciudad, desde donde se veia el gran Volcan Osorno.
This volcano is 2,652 meters high and has been dormant for over 100 years. It houses a ski resort, and it's also possible to hike to its summit in about six hours. This sounds like something I'd like to do sometime soon, but in the meantime, we settled for seeing it from a distance, which was equally beautiful. On all my previous trips, I had only seen one volcano in Neuquén a long time ago, and seeing this one and the Hornopirén Volcano in the same week was great.
Este volcán tiene 2652 metros de altura y está inactivo hace más de 100 años. En el funciona un centro de ski y también es posible hacer una caminata hasta su cumbre en unas seis horas. Esto suena como a algo que me gustaría hacer en algún momento, pero mientras tanto nos conformamos con verlo de lejor que igualmente era hermoso. En todos mis viajes anteriores solo había visto un volcan en Neuquén hace mucho tiempo, y ver este y el Volcán Hornopirén en la misma semana fue genial.
Finally, among the accommodation offers we received, the best option was a small hostel in Puerto Montt for $36 a night. We still had time to get to the neighboring city, so we left Puerto Varas, but not before getting some more great views of the volcano along the way. The feeling I got from seeing this volcano in its beautiful location was something truly beautiful: there I was, mesmerized by the car window. And although these landscapes always look better in real life, I like to look back at the photos to remember I was there ❤️.
Finalmente, entre las ofertas que nos pasaron sobre alojamiento, la mejor opción fue un pequeño hostal en Puerto Montt por $36 la noche. Todavía teniamos tiempo de llegar hasta la ciudad vecina así que nos fuimos de Puerto Varas, no sin antes tener otras buenas vistas del volcán en el camino. La sensación que me dio ver este volcán con su ubicación tan linda fue algo hermoso: ahí iba yo hipnotizada en la ventana del auto. Y aunque estos paisajes siempre resultan mejores en la vida real, me gusta volver a ver las fotos para recordar que estuve ahí ❤️.
