It was the eleventh day of our trip through Bolivia but it felt as if we had been travelling in that country for a much longer time. We had become somewhat accustomed to the arid and beautiful landscapes and the cheap food on every corner. I think that if this trip had been a bit more planned, it wouldn't have been as much fun as it was doing it on the spur of the moment. I didn't have many days left before I had to return to Argentina, so I was making the most of my days as a tourist. Our next planned stop the same morning we woke up was in Samaipata, when we had to travel more than any other day of the trip 🙃.
Era el onceavo día de nuestro viaje por Bolivia pero se sentía como si hubiésemos estado viajado en ese país durante un tiempo mucho más largo. Un poco ya nos habíamos acostumbrado a los paisajes áridos y hermosos y a la comida barata en cada esquina. Pienso que si este paseo hubiese sido un poco más planeado, no hubiese sido tan divertido como lo fue haciéndolo improvisadamente. Yo ya no tenía muchos días por delante antes de tener que volver a Argentina, por lo que estaba disfrutando al máximo mis días de turista. Nuestra siguiente parada planeada la misma mañana en la que nos despertamos fue en Samaipata, cuando tuvimos que viajar más que cualquier otro día del viaje 🙃.
All the way from Uyuni to Sucre, passing through Pulacayo and Potosi in between, we were with a third member of our small travel team. Englishwoman L accompanied us for a total of four nights, until she finally decided to stay longer in Sucre to take Spanish lessons. Meeting her was very productive for me, as talking to her gave me the opportunity to practice my English conversation a bit, something that to this day I am still a bit embarrassed about. The last day we met, the three of us had breakfast together and then Guest M and I set off on our journey further north at around 10 AM 😃.
En todo el tramo que hicimos desde Uyuni hasta Sucre, pasando en medio por Pulacayo y Potosí, estuvimos con una tercer integrante en nuestro pequeño equipo de viaje. Inglesa L nos acompañó por un total de cuatro noches, hasta que finalmente decidió quedarse más tiempo en Sucre para tomar lecciones de español. Conocerla fue muy productivo para mí, ya que hablando con ella tuve la oportunidad de practicar un poco mi conversación en inglés, algo que hasta el día de hoy me da un poco de vergüenza. El último día que nos vimos, desayunamos los tres juntos y después Huésped M y yo emprendimos nuestro viaje más al norte alrededor de las 10 AM 😃.
Looking at the map during breakfast, we saw that a nice place to visit was Samaipata, about 360 km from where we were. To cover all that distance in the little 1997 Suzuki 4x4 was quite a challenge, as this little car is nice but it can't go that fast. We knew it would take us all day to get there, but we both agreed that it was not impossible, so we charged our mobile phones, downloaded a lot of music and before hitting the road, we bought some provisions to last the long day we would have in the car 😃.
Mirando un poco el mapa durante el desayuno, vimos que un lugar lindo para ir a conocer era Samaipata, a unos 360 km desde donde estábamos. Recorrer toda esa distancia en el pequeño Suzuki 4x4 de 1997 era todo un desafío, ya que este autito es lindo pero no puede ir tan rápido. Sabíamos que nos tomaría todo el día llegar hasta ahí, pero ambos coincidimos en que no era imposible, así que cargamos nuestros celulares, descargamos mucha música y antes de salir a la ruta, compramos algunas provisiones para soportar el largo día que tendríamos arriba del auto 😃.
It seemed that every kilometre north we went, the temperature increased rapidly. It was hot as hell that day and neither the heating nor the wind could keep it down. All along our 360 km journey to Samaipata we had to stop a few times to eat something, rest and cool off a bit if we came across a passing river. We also stopped in the afternoon to get some sleep in the car: I don't usually take a siesta, but my role as a chatty co-pilot to keep the driver awake had left me exhausted 😂.
Parecía que cada kilómetro que hacíamos hacia el norte incrementaba la temperatura rápidamente. Ese día hacia un calor del infierno y ni la calefacción ni el viento podían contenerlo. En todo nuestro camino de 360 km hasta Samaipata tuvimos que frenar algunas veces para comer algo, descansar y refrescarnos un poco si encontrábamos algún rio de pasada. También hicimos una parada en la tarde para dormir un poco en el auto: yo no suelo dormir la siesta, pero mi rol de copiloto charlatán para que el conductor no se durmiera me había dejado agotada 😂.
Around 6 PM we started to see the horizon a little closer and we were not so far from Samaipata. We decided it would be a good idea to stop for something substantial to eat, not like the snacks we had been surviving on all day. Approaching the villages in this area, it was very common to find roadside eateries selling homemade food. In particular, we found one eatery where they sold us two plates of fried chicken, rice, noodles, fries and salad for an incredible price. Dare you guess how many Bolivian pesos we paid for all this food in the picture? We didn't buy drinks because we still had plenty of water. I'll give 3 hives to the first one who says the correct value of the bill. Considering that the Bolivian peso costs $0.15, the options are between 20 and 25 Bolivian pesos 😃.
Alrededor de las 6 PM ya empezamos a ver el horizonte un poco más cercano y ya no nos faltaba tanto para llegar a Samaipata. Decidimos que sería buena idea parar a comer algo sustancial, no como los snacks con los que habíamos estado sobreviviendo todo el día. Aproximándonos a los pueblos de esta zona, fue muy común encontrar comedores al costado de la ruta vendiendo comida casera. En particular, encontramos un comedor en donde nos vendieron dos platos con pollo frito, arroz, fideos, papas fritas y ensalada por un precio increíble. ¿Te atreves a adivinar cuántos pesos bolivianos pagamos por toda esta comida de la foto? No compramos bebidas porque todavía teníamos mucha agua. Le regalaré 3 hives al primero que diga el valor correcto de la cuenta. Considerando que el peso boliviano cuesta $0.15, las opciones rondan entre 20 y 25 pesos bolivianos 😃.
After having had ‘our lunch’ almost at dinner time for Europe but at mate time for me, we continued on our way. It turned out that we were not as close as we thought to the hostel we had chosen and we arrived almost at 9 PM. Luckily we were well received, and finally we were able to rest after almost 12 hours in the car. The whole trip to Samaipata was fun because Guest M and I made the journey not so dense with chats and games on the road. Having a travel companion was a lot of fun, and we were ready to see what we could discover in this new place 😃.
Después de haber tenido "nuestro almuerzo" casi en horario de cena para Europa pero en horario de mate para mí, continuamos el camino. Resultó que no estábamos tan cerca como creíamos del hostel que habíamos elegido y llegamos casi a las 9 PM. Por suerte nos recibieron bien, y finalmente pudimos descansar después de haber estado casi 12 horas arriba del auto. Toda la travesía hasta Samaipata fue entretenida porque Huésped M y yo hicimos que el trayecto no sea tan denso entre charlas y juegos en la ruta. Tener un compañero de viaje fue muy divertido, y estábamos listos para ver qué podíamos descubrir en ese nuevo lugar 😃.
