💎Hace unos días, como parte de mi trabajo en la Casa de Cultura, tuve que ir junto a una colega a la Empresa Distribuidora de Libros para hacer la selección correspondiente al año 2025. Es una tarea que asumo con gran placer, ya que estar rodeada de libros es una sensación exquisita. Estos libros luego son utilizados para la realización de talleres, para premiar a los ganadores de concursos, como material de estudio y para otras funciones.

Contábamos con un presupuesto de 2000 pesos, y no se podía gastar un peso más ni un peso menos. Comenzamos nuestra labor a las 9 de la mañana, lamentando no haber llevado un protector bucal, ya que el polvo que hay en esos almacenes es impresionante e inevitable. Pero ya estábamos allí y había que enfrentar la misión. Así que nos sumergimos en aquellos estantes empolvados en busca de lo mejor que pudiéramos encontrar, siempre respetando el capital disponible.

Trabajamos con cuidado, evitando tocarnos la cara para disminuir el riesgo de resfriados y, además, porque la cantidad de roedores que deben circular por esos almacenes debe ser grande. Ninguna de nosotras tenía interés en contraer leptospirosis. Mi compañera de trabajo y yo deliberábamos constantemente cada vez que aparecía algo interesante. Teníamos claro que debían ser muchos más los libros infantiles que los de otras categorías, ya que era lo que más necesitábamos.

Entonces, descubrimos un estante lleno de joyas. Había varios ejemplares de La Edad de Oro, El Principito, El Cochero Azul, El Patito Feo, Había una vez, Blanca Nieves, entre otros. De inmediato nos dimos a la tarea de escoger al menos diez libros de cada uno. Estábamos felices, pero felicidad al fin, duró poco. Cuando nos dirigimos a la compañera que atendía el almacén, nos dijo que ninguno de esos libros infantiles se podía tocar, ya que estaban reservados para escuelas y otros asuntos de interés estatal.

Inconformes, solicitamos ver al director de la Empresa con el fin de persuadirlo para que nos permitiera llevarnos algunos. Luego de una hora de espera, el director nos atendió en su oficina. Logramos, con nuestro mejor verbo y a duras penas, que nos autorizara un ejemplar de cada uno.
A las 12 del mediodía ya teníamos hecha una buena y variada selección, y fuimos a ver a la facturadora. Al sacar cuentas, aún nos faltaban 500 pesos por gastar. De manera que tuvimos que, una vez más, volver al almacén, esta vez ya con los precios de algunos libros para completar la cifra.

A la una de la tarde terminamos el trabajo, estornudando y con las manos negras de suciedad, pero con la satisfacción de haber hecho una buena selección. Nos lavamos las manos en el pequeño baño del almacén y salimos del local. Ya los libros estaban escogidos, separados y facturados. La cuestión ahora será que, antes del 2026, aparezca un transporte para llevarlos a su destino.

💎A few days ago, as part of my work at the House of Culture, I had to go with a colleague to the Book Distribution Company to make the selection for the year 2025. It’s a task I take on with great pleasure, as being surrounded by books is an exquisite feeling. These books are later used for workshops, to award contest winners, as study material, and for other purposes.

We had a budget of 2000 pesos, and we couldn’t spend a peso more or less. We started our work at 9 in the morning, regretting not having brought a face mask, as the dust in those warehouses is impressive and unavoidable. But we were already there, and the mission had to be faced. So, we immersed ourselves in those dusty shelves in search of the best we could find, always respecting the available budget.

We worked carefully, avoiding touching our faces to reduce the risk of catching colds and also because the number of rodents that must roam those warehouses must be significant. Neither of us was interested in contracting leptospirosis. My coworker and I deliberated constantly whenever something interesting appeared. We were clear that there had to be many more children's books than those of other categories, as that was what we needed most.

Then, we discovered a shelf full of treasures. There were several copies of La Edad de Oro, The Little Prince, El Cochero Azul, The Ugly Duckling, Once Upon a Time, Snow White, among others. Immediately, we set out to choose at least ten copies of each. We were happy, but happiness, after all, was short-lived. When we approached the colleague managing the warehouse, she told us that none of those children's books could be touched, as they were reserved for schools and other state-related matters.

Dissatisfied, we requested to see the director of the company to persuade him to allow us to take some. After an hour of waiting, the director received us in his office. With our best arguments and barely managing, we got him to authorize one copy of each.
By 12 noon, we had already made a good and varied selection, and we went to see the invoicing clerk. After calculating, we still had 500 pesos left to spend. So, once again, we had to return to the warehouse, this time with the prices of some books in mind to complete the amount.

At 1 p.m., we finished the work, sneezing and with our hands black from dirt, but with the satisfaction of having made a good selection. We washed our hands in the small warehouse bathroom and left the premises. The books were already chosen, separated, and invoiced. The issue now will be ensuring that, before 2026, transportation appears to take them to their destination.
