Birthdays are almost always a reason for celebration. Although it is true that with each passing year we subtract time from our biological clock, we also gain one more year of experiences, of learnings, and of shared moments. It is one more year of life and that always deserves to be celebrated.
On this particular day we were celebrating my sister’s birthday. And as what is usual on these occasions is to go out of the house to celebrate it, we decided to take a night walk to a place we like very much, the Hotel Nacional of Cuba.
I have already written other times about this beautiful hotel, built at the beginning of the last century and considered one of the historic and emblematic places of the capital. That night we reserved in one of its establishments to enjoy a family dinner, in the Cafeteria ‘El Rincon del Cine’.
To get to the cafeteria one has to go through a kind of gallery, a large hallway where works and artistic pieces are always exhibited.
Right before entering there is a space decorated with images, paintings, and a large mural that pays homage both to Cuban culture and to the history of the hotel. It is a space that connects with gastronomy and art. Art is linked to everyday life, that is why we can find it in any corner, like in this place.
That day there was an exhibition of paintings that caught my attention very much. They were works made with volume that changed depending on the angle from which they were looked at. From the front they showed one image but when we moved to the sides another different one appeared. I found it interesting and even fun, because it reflected very well the idea of life that we were celebrating, each person lives it from their own perspective, and depending on how we look at it it can appear different.
The food was simple but delicious. The place is set with a cinematographic theme, as its name indicates. The walls are decorated with elements alluding to cinema and photography. There is a small space that I love because it preserves old objects such as cameras, radios, vinyl records, photos, and posters that evoke other times.
Visiting the Hotel Nacional is always also an opportunity to go through its gardens, and although it was night and we could not fully enjoy the view of the sea as happens under the light of day, the surroundings continue being beautiful. The decorative lights and the cozy atmosphere give it a special charm.
It was a pleasant birthday full of details that made it unforgettable, it was a beautiful night and a nice way of accompanying my sister on her day.

Los cumpleaños casi siempre son motivo de celebración. Aunque es cierto que con cada año que pasa vamos restando tiempo de nuestro reloj biológico también ganamos un año más de experiencias, de aprendizajes y de vivencias compartidas. Es un año más de vida y eso siempre merece ser celebrado.
Este día en especial estábamos festejando el cumpleaños de mi hermana. Y como lo habitual en estas ocasiones es salir de casa para celebrarlo, decidimos hacer un paseo nocturno hacia un lugar que nos gusta mucho, el Hotel Nacional de Cuba.
Ya he escrito otras veces sobre este hermoso hotel, construido a principios del siglo pasado y considerado uno de los lugares históricos y emblemáticos de la capital. Esa noche reservamos en uno de sus locales para disfrutar de una cena en familia, en la Cafetería 'El Rincon del Cine'.
Para llegar a la cafetería hay que atravesar una especie de galería, un gran pasillo donde siempre se exponen obras y piezas artísticas.
Justo antes de entrar hay un espacio decorado con imágenes, pinturas y un gran mural que rinde homenaje tanto a la cultura cubana como a la historia del hotel. Es un espacio que conecta con la gastronomía y el arte. El arte se vincula a la vida cotidiana, es por eso que podemos hallarlo en cualquier rincón, como en este lugar.
Ese día había una exposición de cuadros que me llamó mucho la atención. Eran obras hechas con volumen que cambiaban según el ángulo desde el que se miraban. De frente mostraban una imagen, pero al movernos hacia los lados aparecía otra distinta. Me pareció interesante y hasta divertido, porque reflejaba muy bien la idea de la vida que estábamos celebrando, cada persona la vive desde su propia perspectiva, y según cómo la miremos puede lucir diferente.
La comida fue sencilla pero deliciosa. El sitio está ambientado con una temática cinematográfica, como su nombre lo indica. Las paredes están decoradas con elementos alusivos al cine y la fotografía. Hay un pequeño espacio que me encanta porque conserva objetos antiguos como cámaras, radios, discos de vinilo, fotos y carteles que evocan otras épocas.
Visitar el Hotel Nacional siempre es además una oportunidad para recorrer sus jardines, y aunque era de noche y no pudimos disfrutar plenamente de la vista al mar como sucede bajo la luz del día, los alrededores siguen siendo hermoso. Las luces decorativas y el ambiente acogedor le dan un encanto especial.
Fue un cumpleaños ameno y lleno de detalles que lo hicieron inolvidable, fue una bella noche y una bonita manera de acompañar a mi hermana en su día.
