Hello everyone, friends of Hive Book Club, I hope you're all doing great. This time, I'm here to bring you another opinion... and we have to talk about Freida McFadden. It's impossible to walk into a bookstore or scroll through BookTok without coming across her name, and for good reason. The woman is absolutely killing it in the thriller genre, and honestly, I was curious to see if all the hype was worth it. I'd heard it all—people who loved her, people who not so much—so I decided to give The Inmate a try, especially since it's super easy to get. And look, I didn't even have to buy a physical copy, which my overflowing bookshelves are very thankful for. The premise alone is enough to get you hooked right away. Picture this: we have Brooke, our protagonist, who's a nurse and gets a new job... where? In a men's maximum-security prison.

Right there, things already get tense, don't they? But wait! It turns out that one of the most famous inmates there, a certain Shane Nelson, is no stranger... he was her high school boyfriend... the typical star quarterback. And the craziest part is that it was HER testimony that sent him to prison for some horrific murders about ten years ago. I mean, the book just throws all this drama and mystery at you from the get-go... because, let's see, why on earth would she return to her hometown? And why would she agree to work in the SAME prison where the guy who basically destroyed her life is? Those questions hook you instantly, there's no way around it. McFadden jumps between the present, with all the tension of Brooke in the prison, and flashbacks to the past, right to the night that changed everything. This time-jumping thing is a super common trick in thrillers, you know?

But here, it really works incredibly well. In the present, you feel a constant anxiety, a fear of what's going to happen to Brooke in such a dangerous place. Meanwhile, the flashbacks slowly feed you the whole story, showing you how things were before and what exactly happened to make it all go to hell. Plus, the chapters are super short, you fly through them... and that makes it mega addictive, one of those books where you say, 'okay, just one more chapter,' and before you know it, it's three in the morning and you have to get up early the next day.

Hola a todos, amigos de Hive Book Club, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión, vengo a traerles otra opinion.. y hay que hablar de Freida McFadden, es que ya es imposible entrar a una librería o scrollear por BookTok sin toparse con su nombre, y con justa razón. La tipa la está rompiendo en el género del thriller y yo, la verdad, ya tenía curiosidad de saber si tanto alboroto valía la pena.. había escuchado de todo, gente que la amaba, gente que no tanto, así que me animé con The Inmate, sobre todo porque es súper fácil de conseguir.. Y miren, ni siquiera tuve que comprarlo en físico, cosa que mis estanterías, que ya no dan para más, agradecen un montón.. la pura premisa es suficiente para que te enganches de una. Imagínense esto: tenemos a Brooke, nuestra prota, que es enfermera y consigue un nuevo trabajo... ¿dónde? En una cárcel de máxima seguridad para hombre, ya con eso la cosa se pone tensa, ¿no? ¡Pero espérense!

Resulta que uno de los presos más famosos de ahí, un tal Shane Nelson, no es ningún desconocido.. era su novio de la prepa.. el típico quarterback estrella, y lo más fuerte es que fue el testimonio de ELLA el que lo mandó a la cárcel por unos asesinatos horribles hace como diez años. O sea, el libro te suelta de una todo este drama y misterio.. porque, a ver, ¿por qué rayos volvería a su pueblo? ¿Y por qué aceptaría trabajar en la MISMA cárcel donde está el tipo que, básicamente, le destrozó la vida? Esas preguntas te enganchan al toque, no hay de otra, McFadden va saltando entre el presente, con toda la tensión de Brooke en la cárcel, y flashbacks al pasado, justo a la noche que lo cambió todo. Esto de los saltos en el tiempo es un truco súper común en los thrillers, ¿saben?

Pero acá, de verdad que funciona increíble, en el presente, sientes una angustia constante, un miedo de qué va a pasar con Brooke en ese lugar tan peligroso, y mientras, los flashbacks te van soltando de a poquito toda la historia, mostrándote cómo era todo antes y qué fue exactamente lo que pasó para que todo se fuera al diablo. Además, los capítulos son súper cortos, se leen volando.. y eso lo hace mega adictivo, de esos libros que dices ‘bueno, un capítulo más y ya’, y cuando te das cuenta, ya son las tres de la mañana y al otro día tienes que madrugar.

Hey, and I want to talk about the criticisms I always see online, because I think they're now part of the "Freida McFadden experience." A lot of people say that Brooke, the protagonist, is incredibly dumb, that she makes one bad decision after another... and honestly, I get it. There are moments when you just want to grab her by the shoulders and scream, "Girl, get a clue! What are you thinking?!" But I think you have to look at it differently. This is a woman who went through a massive trauma that split her life in two. When someone goes through something like that, their judgment gets clouded; they're not going to act in the most logical way. Her past makes her an unreliable narrator, and that's precisely what adds a fascinating layer to the story. It makes you doubt not only everyone else but also how she herself is perceiving things. And this brings me to the other big complaint: that you have to turn off your brain for a while to enjoy her books.

And to that, I say... well, of course you do! And that's not a bad thing! That's why we read fiction, right? To escape. Nobody picks up The Inmate expecting a super-realistic documentary; you pick it up to get on a wild, twisted, and slightly over-the-top rollercoaster. If you let yourself get carried away by the drama and accept that the story prioritizes mind-blowing twists over stark realism, you'll have a much better time. And McFadden's pacing is key to this. Unlike other authors who drop breadcrumbs and clues along the way, she builds and builds, saving the massive, jaw-dropping revelations for the end. Yes, the middle of the book might feel a bit slow, but I swear I was biting my nails to get to the end because I knew the final punch was going to be epic.

Oigan, y quiero hablar de las críticas que siempre veo en internet, porque creo que ya son parte de la "experiencia Freida McFadden".. mucha gente dice que Brooke, la protagonista, es increíblemente tonta, que toma una mala decisión tras otra.. la verdad, los entiendo. Hay momentos en que te provoca agarrarla por los hombros y gritarle: "¡Amiga, date cuenta! ¡¿En qué estás pensando?!". Pero yo creo que hay que verlo de otra forma, esta es una mujer que vivió un trauma fuertísimo que le partió la vida en dos. Cuando alguien pasa por algo así, su juicio se le nubla, no va a actuar de la forma más lógica.. su pasado la convierte en una narradora de la que no te puedes fiar, y justo eso le añade algo fascinante a la historia, te hace dudar no solo de los demás, sino de cómo ella misma está viendo las cosas. Y esto me lleva a la otra gran queja: que tienes que apagar el cerebro un rato para disfrutar sus libros.

Y a eso yo les digo… ¡pues claro que sí! ¡Y eso no es malo! Para eso leemos ficción, ¿no?, para escaparnos.. nadie agarra The Inmate esperando un documental súper realista; lo agarras para subirte a una montaña rusa salvaje, retorcida y un poquito exagerada. Si te dejas llevar por el drama y aceptas que la historia le da más importancia a los giros que te dejan loco que al realismo puro y duro, la vas a pasar mil veces mejor. Y el ritmo de McFadden es clave en esto.. a diferencia de otros autores que te van soltando migajas y pistas por el camino, ella va construyendo y construyendo, y se guarda las revelaciones masivas, de esas que te dejan con la boca abierta, para el final, sí, puede que a mitad del libro se sienta un poco lento, pero les juro que yo me estaba comiendo las uñas por llegar al final porque sabía que el madrazo iba a ser épico.

Okay, what I enjoyed most was that it's pure entertainment. You can feel the tension from the very first page, really! And the mystery is incredibly gripping. I swear, there was a point where I was suspicious of every single character, even the one who seemed the nicest. On the other hand, the one little thing I felt could have been better was the dialogue, which sometimes sounded a bit too simple or slightly forced. Mind you, it didn't ruin the book for me at all, but it was that small detail that would occasionally pull me out of the story, which otherwise keeps you completely hooked. So, who is this book for?

Look, if you love stories that are all about the plot, with an ending that makes you rethink everything you just read, this is for you. It's the perfect book to break a reading slump or for a weekend when you just want to devour something addictive and full of suspense. Now, if you're looking for super poetic prose and deeply complex characters, this might not be your kind of book. But if you're here for the twists, the surprises, and pure fun, you're going to love it!

I give The Inmate a solid 4/5 stars. It delivered everything I expected: a gripping, fast-paced, entertaining thriller with an ending that genuinely surprised me. I took off one star for some dialogue that didn't quite convince me, but overall, it was a read I thoroughly enjoyed. A ver, lo que más disfruté fue que es puro entretenimiento.. la tensión se siente desde la primera página, ¡de verdad!, y el misterio te engancha muchísimo. Se los juro, llegó un punto en que dudaba de todos los personajes, hasta del que parecía más buena gente.. por otro lado, la única cosita que sentí que pudo estar mejor fueron los diálogos, que a veces sonaban como muy simples o un poco forzados. Ojo, no me arruinó el libro para nada, pero era ese pequeño detalle que de repente me sacaba de la historia, que por lo demás te tiene súper metido.. entonces, ¿para quién es este libro?

Miren, si a ustedes les encantan esas historias que son pura trama, con un final que los hace replantearse todo lo que acaban de leer, esto es para ustedes, es el libro perfecto para salir de un bloqueo lector o para un fin de semana en el que solo quieren devorarse algo adictivo y lleno de suspenso. Ahora, si ustedes buscan una prosa súper poética y personajes mega complejos, chance y este no sea su tipo de libro.. pero si están aquí por los giros, las sorpresas y la pura diversión, ¡les va a encantar!

Yo le doy a The Inmate unas sólidas 4/5 estrellas, cumplió con todo lo que yo esperaba: un thriller que te atrapa, rápido, entretenido y con un final que de verdad me sorprendió. Le quité una estrella por algunos diálogos que no me terminaron de convencer, pero en general, fue una lectura que disfruté un montón.. si tienen curiosidad por todo el hype de Freida McFadden y no saben con cuál empezar, yo digo que esta es una opción buenísima.
