Feliz sábado amigos, Feliz Día de los enamorados. Hoy es Día de San Valentín, y el mundo (los que pueden), festeja, comercian y aman aunque no tengan pareja.
Por acá se felicita a todo el mundo, amigos, familia, pareja y hasta a los desconocidos. Lo cierto es el Día de San Valentín, es celebrado cada 14 de febrero, por sus inicios en la antigua Roma y en la figura de San Valentín, un sacerdote que desafió las prohibiciones para casar a los enamorados.
Ahora es muy fácil creer que si estás enamorado o solo quieres casarte, pues lo haces y listo, pero en la antiguedad no. En la Antigua Grecia, el matrimonio era principalmente un acuerdo legal y social entre familias, no una cuestión de amor .
Para que la unión fuera legítima, se requería el consentimiento del padre o tutor de la novia, quien la entregaba mediante un contrato privado. La mujer no tenía capacidad legal para decidir y solía casarse entre los 14 y 16 años, mientras que el hombre rondaba los 30.
Muchos filmes nos dan algunos elementos, los mas románticos, pero profesar amor era muy complicado. La dote entregada por la familia de la novia era un requisito social fundamental, aunque no legal. Además, algunas leyes exigían que ambos contrayentes fueran ciudadanos para que los hijos fueran legítimos.
El objetivo principal del matrimonio era perpetuar la familia y un nombre. Para ello el amor no era importante. El destino de la mujer enamorada era a menudo un camino marcado por la tragedia y la falta de autonomía. El amor, aunque presente no era suficiente para forjar un destino.
En sociedades patriarcales como la griega o la romana, la identidad de la mujer se diluía en la del padre o el marido, y el amor rara vez era una elección personal, era más bien un acuerdo para la procreación y la transmisión de herencia.
Las pasiones femeninas, consideradas peligrosas e irracionales, debían ser controladas. Varias literarias encarnan este conflicto: su amor prohibido o no correspondido las conducía a la muerte o al abandono, castigadas por osar anteponer su deseo a las estrictas normas sociales que las confinaban al silencio y al deber.
Con el tiempo, esta fecha se transformó en una celebración global del amor y la amistad. Su tradición más arraigada consiste en expresar los sentimientos a través de detalles significativos, como el intercambio de cartas, flores, bombones o pequeños regalos. Hoy la fecha, como el Día de la madre, es un negocio global.
Más allá del consumismo, San Valentín invita a reflexionar sobre la importancia de valorar a quienes queremos, dedicándoles tiempo de calidad y reforzando los lazos afectivos que nos unen. En esencia, es un recordatorio para cultivar el amor en todas sus formas durante todo el año.

Happy Saturday, friends, Happy Valentine's Day. Today is Valentine's Day, and the world (those who can) celebrates, trades, and loves, even if they don't have a partner.
Around here, we congratulate everyone—friends, family, partners, and even strangers. The truth is, Valentine's Day is celebrated every February 14th, with its origins in ancient Rome and the figure of Saint Valentine, a priest who defied prohibitions to marry lovers.
Nowadays, it's very easy to believe that if you're in love or just want to get married, you do it and that's it. But in ancient times, it wasn't like that. In Ancient Greece, marriage was primarily a legal and social agreement between families, not a matter of love.
For the union to be legitimate, the consent of the bride's father or guardian was required, as he would give her away through a private contract. Women had no legal capacity to decide and were usually married between the ages of 14 and 16, while the man was around 30.
Many films give us some elements, the most romantic ones, but professing love was very complicated. The dowry provided by the bride's family was a fundamental social requirement, though not a legal one. Additionally, some laws required both spouses to be citizens for the children to be considered legitimate.
The main purpose of marriage was to perpetuate the family and a name. Love was not important for that. The fate of a woman in love was often a path marked by tragedy and a lack of autonomy. Love, even when present, was not enough to forge a destiny.
In patriarchal societies like the Greek or Roman ones, a woman's identity was diluted into that of her father or husband, and love was rarely a personal choice; it was more of an arrangement for procreation and the transmission of inheritance.

Female passions, considered dangerous and irrational, had to be controlled. Various literary figures embody this conflict: their forbidden or unrequited love led them to death or abandonment, punished for daring to put their desires before the strict social norms that confined them to silence and duty.
Over time, this date transformed into a global celebration of love and friendship. Its most deeply rooted tradition consists of expressing feelings through meaningful details, such as exchanging letters, flowers, chocolates, or small gifts. Today, the date, like Mother's Day, is a global business.
Beyond consumerism, Valentine's Day invites us to reflect on the importance of valuing those we care about, dedicating quality time to them and strengthening the emotional bonds that unite us. In essence, it is a reminder to cultivate love in all its forms throughout the year.
And here I am, inspired, downstairs in my building, watching a young couple looking so bored. Love and illusion are necessary, but well, as the saying goes: here I am, so pretty and single.
