Hello everyone, today I'm going to show you something I personally really enjoyed doing. To give you some context, almost a year ago I gave my grandmother a coin purse, which she used for many things. However, it was recently attacked by some curious mice who made some very noticeable holes in it. A few days ago she showed it to me and asked me to fix it, since, as you know, a few months ago my sister and I bought a small sewing machine. So, without hesitation, after finding what I needed, I got to work. And as you'll see, the mission wasn't to restore it, but to make it from scratch.
Hola a todos, hoy les vengo a mostrar algo que personalmente disfruté mucho realizar y es que, para entrarlos en contexto, hace cosa de casi un año le regalé un monedero a mi abuela, el cual usaba para muchas cosas, pero que recientemente fue atacado por algunos ratones curiosos y le hicieron algunos huecos muy notorios, por lo que hace unos días me lo mostró y me dijo que se lo acomodara, ya que, como saben, hace unos meses adquirimos una pequeña máquina para mi hermana y yo, por lo que, sin pensar, luego de buscar lo que necesitaba, me puse manos a la obra. Y es que, como verán, la misión en sí era no restaurar, sino hacerlo desde cero.
Therefore, the materials you will need are:
.A small piece of fabric.
.Scissors
.Thread
.A marker, pencil, or chalk for marking.
.A razor blade or seam ripper (this is for removing the seam allowance).
.A sewing machine
Por lo que los materiales a usar serían:
Un trozo de tela que no sea muy grande.
tijeras
hilo
Marcador, lápiz o tiza para marcar.
Hojilla o un desbrador (esto para despegar el monedero).
Máquina de coser
As a first step, I used a blade to carefully peel off the coin purse's clasp, and then the entire purse frame. I was very careful, though, because the original material was a kind of faux leather that could easily be cut too much (and since my eyesight isn't great, I was very meticulous). The point is not only to separate the pieces, but also to use the purse's structure as a pattern to avoid mistakes; it's also much easier that way.
Como primer paso, utilicé una hojilla para despegar lo que era el cierre del monedero poco a poco y, posteriormente, también toda la estructura del monedero; eso sí, con mucho cuidado, ya que el material original de este mismo era una especie de cuerina y se podría cortar de más muy fácil (y como mi vista no es tan buena, era muy minucioso lo que hacía). Y es que el punto de esto es no solo separar las piezas, sino también basarnos en la estructura del monedero y usarla como un patrón para así evitar errores, además de que es más fácil.
The fabric I decided to use was scraps my mom had from her sewing projects. Since it's a kind of canvas, it's quite sturdy and durable, so I turned it inside out and placed the frame on top, tracing the entire shape. One of the things I wanted was for it to be a little longer, so I added a few centimeters when tracing. Then, once that was done, I cut out the pieces, made the pointed details, and checked that it was the right size for the zipper so I'd be ready to start sewing.
La tela que decidí usar era de unos retazos que tenía mi mamá de sus costuras y que, al ser como una especie de lona, es bastante resistente y dura, por lo que, dándole la vuelta, procedí a colocar la estructura encima y a marcar toda la forma. Acá una de las cosas que quería era que quedara un poco más largo, por lo que al momento de marcar le agrandé unos centímetros de más, y asimismo, una vez listo, cortando y haciendo los detalles de los picos y checando que estuviera bien con el tamaño del cierre para así tener todo listo para pasar a la costura.
To sew the zipper, once I had threaded it through the machine and adjusted everything, I decided to try sewing right sides together and then turning it inside out to create a double seam for added reinforcement. I must say, it turned out very, very well, and I liked it because it looks neater. This isn't difficult, but it is a bit tedious when it comes to sewing the other side of the zipper, which you have to do carefully while also keeping an eye on the zipper to avoid it hitting or jamming.
Para pegar el cierre, una vez colocado el hilo en la máquina y ajustado todo, quise probar el pegar lo que es derecho con derecho y, una vez así, voltearlo a modo de que quede con una doble costura y esté más reforzado. Cosa que debo decir que me quedó muy, muy bien y me gustó, ya que queda más prolijo. Esto debo decir que no es difícil, pero sí un poco fastidioso cuando se trata de pegar la otra parte del cierre, la cual hay que hacer con cuidado y al mismo tiempo controlar el cierre para evitar chocar o que se trabe.
Once the zipper was attached, I proceeded to sew the sides of the coin purse and then the corners that we had previously cut to give it its shape. I stitched it several times to ensure it was secure and wouldn't come undone, as it was a very small point. Once that was done, I turned it right side out to see the result.
Una vez pegado el cierre, pasé a coser los lados del monedero y, posteriormente, las esquinas que previamente cortamos para así darle forma al mismo. Acá le pasé varias veces la costura para que quedara bien sujeto y no se soltara, ya que era un pico muy pequeño, y una vez listo, pasé a lo que fue dar la vuelta para así ver el resultado.
Honestly, I really liked how it turned out, and it looks a bit more like the wallets my grandmother has. Even though I added centimeters to make it bigger, it only expanded a little. However, since the fabric is different, it allows me to fit more things than I used to, and the zipper turned out much better than I expected.
La verdad, me gustó muchísimo cómo quedó y así se parece un poco más a los monederos que tiene mi abuela, y aunque le agregué centímetros para que quedara más grande, esto solo se expandió un poco; sin embargo, como la tela es distinta, permite que quepan más cosas de las que se le solía poner, y el tema del cierre quedó mucho mejor de lo que esperaba.
