First of all, it’s important that we know what surrogacy is because that is what I’ll be talking about today. I’m very sure some of us know or have an idea of what surrogacy means but just incase you are not sure, surrogacy is simply a woman carrying the child of another intended parents or a couple in her womb. This is usually for different reasons. For example, there are some women that can’t be pregnant for long due to the nature of their hips. They might be able to nurture the child for some months but any little stress, mistake or hard work might easily cause them to record a miscarriage. For some, they might be too sick to carry a child so they opt in for this kind of way of building a family.

Some might want to go for this way of building a family because they don’t want people to see them as infertile. Some do this because they are still scared of carrying a child for 9 months inside them. While on the aspect of the surrogate, the one who carries the child (mostly not the real mother), she does this for the benefits she can get from it. Most times, it is mostly those that are well to do (wealthy) that opt in for this kind of way of building a family so, the surrogate gets to enjoy some really good benefits. Also, she might want to do this out of compassion for the couple too and some other reasons best known to those who practice this.
So, as we have seen, there are so many reasons why people engage in surrogacy as a way of building a family and that is why the Hivelearners topic for this edition has asked us to share our thoughts, if this is something we might want to be involved with or not. We were asked a few questions so I will try my best to just give my answers to those questions. So without further ado, let me share my response with you on this topic.
What are your thoughts on surrogacy?
My simple thought on surrogacy is that it is one way people can build their family these days. Thanks to technology advancement, as long as there is a willing surrogate, a working sperm from the man and an ovum from the woman, a couple can have their own child that will have the same genetic makeup as them even without the woman carrying the child in her womb. So, the idea of surrogacy is one that will make so much sense to some persons, even if there might be some challenges along the line.
Is this something you feel you would ever get involved in if you had to?
Personally, I don’t think I would ever want to consider surrogacy because I don’t think I trust anyone enough to carry my child for me and I won’t want anyone to suffer the pain of bearing my child for me. Also, I will rather consider other means of bringing a child to this world than going through this method because I don’t think I like the idea of a third party whether or not the person agrees and I also don’t think my future partner will like that too (maybe if he appreciates the idea I might have a rethink but overall I don’t). Also, being a surrogate or paying a surrogate will lead me to lying to a lot of people because I know so many people might want to be judgy about the whole thing so I would definitely want to keep it from as many people as possible and that is a lot of work for me. I don’t want.
Is it ethical?
On the aspect of the surrogate, this might be a thing of debate because they are the one at risk more and that is why they are also the ones likely to bridge the contract first. But then, as long as all the parties involved agrees to it, then I think it is ethical.
Should this method of childbearing be abandoned in favour of traditional methods?
Well, in my personal humble opinion, I just feel the disadvantages are quite more than the advantages but then, if people are willing to do it, then I won’t really want to stop them except I know they have an ulterior motive behind their decision. But as long as they are doing it for the major reason of helping a couple have their own child or children, then this method is still quite an helpful one and it should be allowed but it should always be based on all parties consenting to it.
This is my response to the questions, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments let’s discuss more.
