Tried out PheonixSkye's F2P Magic Deck. 8/18 in Auric Gold.

So I thought I might try out PhoenixSkye's Free 2 Play Magic Deck. They apparently got 15 wins in Mythic with this basically free deck not too long ago so I thought I might as well give it a try and see if I can win some Mortal Judgment packs.

I really like the idea of the challenge, to show that one can win Mythic games with the free to play decks. So my hopes were high since they got 15 Mythic wins, but honestly looking at the cards I was not so sure how it would go. It's also possible I wasn't playing the deck optimally.

First I started playing before the weekend to see I could work my way up the ranks with it, here are some example games.

Game I 0-1 Rank 9

Started out ok, I looked like I was dominating from the start and since I was playing presumably vs Aggro Light I thought that was a good sign. Neither of my creatures could be killed with one hit of their mace.

Here, I still felt in control, had enough AoE in my hand to clear their creatures, I think I was getting too confident.

Screenshot (89).png
I should have kept their board clear every turn, but at this point they got 2 creatures down, and boosted them with Asterius, dealing quite a bit of face damage to me. At that point I didn't have enough , life, cards or mana to clear all their creatures in time and they won.

Game II 0-2 Rank 9

I figured the moth wouldn't last but heck, it was still worth a try, They ended up using first Wrong Path and then another creature roar effect to kill it.

Screenshot (94).png
Here Crystal Rain came in handy. I felt I was still in control here.

Screenshot (95).png
When they got rid of my big frontline creature and stole it's health, that was pretty much the turning point.

Screenshot (96).png
Argh! Asterius again. That was the end for me, maybe if I would have drawn a very good 7 mana card but I didn't and they finished me off in two turns.

I lost but still was happy to get a Green Giant.

Game III 1-2 Rank 9

Here War didn't start too fast, and I was able to clear their board pretty consistently. So far, so good.

image.png
At this point my board was looking pretty good, and they weren't able to deal with it. After a turn where I cleared all of their side again with Crystal Rain and Street Conjuror, they conceded.

Game IV 1-3 Rank 9

I thought I was doing ok vs Nature in this game until they put 3 armor onto their creature with regen. I maybe there was a slim chance that I could deal 6 dmg in one spell but at this point in the game my prospects were not looking great.

image.png
Things starting looking even worse when I saw another creature with a bunch of armor appear.

image.png
They then just kept on buffing those creatures and my spells were not useful at all.

Game V 2-3 Rank 9
Screenshot (99).png
I won this game but I didn't really deserve it. They didn't do much at all for a while.

Screenshot (100).png
When they finally started summoning creatures, it was already too late. They didn't even get time to use the 7 mana card they had stolen from my hand. That might have changed the outcome actually.

Game VI 3-3 Rank 9
Screenshot (101).png
Looked like an Anubian deck. I figured if I could get enough favor I could get rid of their annoying relic at least.

Screenshot (102).png
Things worked out pretty well, I was expecting a Land of the Dead but it didn't come, and I was able to get them down to 0 life with the help of 8 damage directly from spells, plus my creatures attacks, which they did not deal with at all.

Game VII 4-3 Rank 9
Screenshot (103).png
I started with two Starshard bolts, and I used one vs their first turn Broccoli, in this game vs a Cujo team member. This looked OKish so far, with my Time Bomb set up to clear their board.

Screenshot (104).png
Their relic was sort of concerning me, but when I played Porphyrion they conceded right away.

Game VII 5-3 Rank 9
Screenshot (105).png
Felt like I was getting the hand of this deck. Wasn't sure what to make of them choosing Flourish god power, and I was annoyed I didn't have a Starshard Bolt for their Broccoli this time.

Screenshot (106).png
I was doing my best to keep their board clear, even though it felt sort of close.

Screenshot (107).png
Didn't want to have to use my 2 Wyrmbreaths to clear their board but I did. It was worth it though, since it seemed they were running out of cards finally.

Screenshot (109).png
Crystal Rain vs those pesky Dragonflies is just what you need.

Screenshot (110).png
I thought I was going to start dealing some good face damage but they cleared a good portion of my board. Even so, when I played Stormstress and cleared their board again they conceded.

Weekend Ranked

Well, you get the idea. I played Weekend Ranked and did ok I guess, although I was hoping on doing better.

Like last weekend I was a win short from getting a Mortal Judgment pack.

Overall it is a very very accessible deck, and it worked better than I would expect just looking at the cards. The meta might have shifted a bit since PheonixSkye made it but I found it a very fun deck to play. I feel like it had a hard time dealing with Heirloom Death, Deception, and Aggro Nature if they got a very strong head start.

If anyone has a suggestion for a deck they want to see me try out just let me know in the comments below.
