Undoubtedly science continues to advance and is becoming more and more impressive, scientific “achievements” are the order of the day and are proudly exhibited hand in hand with technological progress, today it seems closer and closer to us real scenarios of what we have seen in science fiction movies, such as “Jurassic World” or “Star Wars”.
Scientists are reaching unimaginable milestones for some of us, from the cloning of animal species, to the supposed “de-extinction” of animals that lived thousands of years ago, that became extinct and now scientists are making great efforts to bring them back to life, now, there are plans and experiments that are being released depending on the successful outcome they may yield.
Then, in relation to this, some questions could arise, for example: How many scientific experiments are being worked in secret? What is the purpose of these experiments? Which ones are thought to help solve some biological problem in humanity? Or how many of them are thought to do harm or to reach some kind of world “Supremacy”?... Among other questions that we could ask...
“Terrible wolf.”
A few days ago the company Colossal Biosciences announced the “de-extinction” of the “Dire Wolf” or “Giant Wolf” a species extinct about 13,000 years ago, according to reports researchers managed to edit the DNA of this species, which was taken from two fossils, a 13. 000-year-old tooth found in Ohio and a 72,000-year-old skull found in Idaho, this information allowed scientists to revive this extinct wolf species by isolating blood cells from gray wolves and culturing them on a plate. There, they modified the wolf's DNA.
Although scientists do not consider these to be “revived giant wolves” because they do not eat an ancestral diet, nor are they raised in packs where the actual behavior of a giant wolf can be learned, however, if we pay attention to the statements of Cornell University geneticist Adam Boyko, who, although not involved in this project said the following, “It is exciting to be able to create functional versions of extinct species.”
“Create functional versions” of what?...... For now of the giant wolf, but in the company's plans there are other potential candidates to be “revived”, specifically the Woolly Mammoth and the Dodo, a flightless bird that became extinct three centuries ago.
What's next? These animals live in captivity somewhere in the northern United States, where they will spend their entire lives in the care of scientists who will study the wolves' behavior throughout their developmental stages. But what if the wolves escape, what if they “interbreed” with other species?
We may have no idea of the similar or more ambitious projects that are underway right now, we just pray that all this does not get out of control and we end up in an “apocalypse” similar to the ones we see in science fiction movies.
Final thought
With the exception of the dinosaurs that are presumed to have been extinguished as a result of the impact of a meteorite on the earth, an event that would cause environmental changes that led to the extinction of these prehistoric animals, according to the most accepted hypothesis, the rest of the animals are attributed their extinction to the influence of man in their habitat, or the bad practice of indiscriminate hunting.
From my point of view, no matter the cause for which some animals became extinct, I think that for some reason our beloved creator allowed this to happen; the fact that some animals went to extinction only He in His wisdom and sovereignty knows the reasons for allowing it, and we are not the ones to decide to bring them back among us, nor are we able to measure the consequences of an action like this.
Now we can only wait to see what this experiment leaves us and what the benefit is for a humanity that is struggling with climate change, poverty, chronic diseases and hunger.
