Hi everyone! This year I decided to put my grow journal on steemit to share what I am doing with my homegrown cannabis project. I feel very blessed to live in a region of the world where cannabis can be freely cultivated and used without persecution, and finally feel comfortable to be able to share what we have going on in our little neck of the woods.
Now I work professionally in cannabis and will likely be setting up an account for the farm soon, but this is just my regular home grow project. I try to keep it as realistic as possible, as when I first got into the grow game I had little knowledge and even less resources.
So I get it.
Germinating seeds is sometimes called "cracking beanz" in the cannabis world, hence the name for this post. I haven't actually started my own seeds before (I usually get clones) so this was a new adventure for me. I bought a simple seed starter tray at the local Home Depot that came with thirty- two peat moss plugs. I only ended up using thirteen of the plugs for this round though as I intend to grow these as the "mothers" and take clones from them.
I have some new strains on deck this year. The strains I intend to grow this year are:
Hawaiian Maui Strawberry
Prussian Blue x Nicaraguan
Bubba Kush x Fuckin' Incredible
Taffy
Quantum Kush x Lemon Diesel
Here is a pic of the Quantum Kush x Lemon Diesel seed in the peat moss just before I tuck her in:
And then here are the original beanz I cracked about three weeks ago. This was a super experimental project as I thought it was still a bit too cold outside to get a good start to them. Fortunately they are holding up and doing OK so far. Check it out:
These plants are funny. I received a few seeds from some grower friends last year, but they didn't know exactly which strains were which. We call packs of weed or seeds that get mixed like that "skittle packs" due to the variety of flavors possible. So I called a few of these "Skittles." The other half of the seeds I received from a buddy have no known origin. In the US there is a movie about a little girl who is an orphan. Her name is Annie. I call these seeds of unknown origin my "Annie OG's."
The problem with seeds is they can be either female or male. The cannabis plants we see and enjoy smoking are female, so obviously female plants are preferred. Male plants contain potent pollen sacks and need to be carefully handled and maintained so pollen doesn't contaminate female plants unintentionally. As a result, males are often culled early and often in the cultivation process, unless being bred specifically for breeding purposes. I estimate I will be able to determine the sex of these plants in a few weeks and will cull them as needed.
For now my primary focus is on the new seed crop as those are the strains I was hoping to grow this season.
OK everyone, that's it for today. Thanks for checking out my feed and I look forward to sharing more progress in the garden in the coming months. Peace.
