On my way home tonight, I decided to drop by the nearby bicycle parking area for a little photo exercise. I’ve been wanting to practice shooting at night more often, just to challenge myself with shadows, harsh lights, and the kind of contrast that only shows up when the day is already gone.

The bicycle parking spot was perfect for that. There were so many small details that caught my attention right away, the worn bike saddle with its texture, the chain and combination lock hanging like a quiet reminder of caution, and the messy bundle of ropes and wires resting on a basket like someone’s everyday survival kit. Even a crushed can on the ground became part of the scene. It’s funny how street photography works: the “ordinary” suddenly looks interesting when you slow down enough to really see it.
But while I was taking photos, a thought hit me.
It started to feel wrong, not because I was doing something bad, but because I realized how it might look from the outside. A person standing around bikes at night, taking close-up shots… I couldn’t help thinking that someone might assume I was trying to steal a bicycle. I didn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable, and I also didn’t want to put myself in a situation where I’d have to explain what I was doing.
So I immediately made a move and walked away from the parking area.
I’m pretty sure some people still thought I was weird for whatever I was doing, but that’s okay. Luckily, I already took enough photos before that moment of doubt, so I’m satisfied. Tonight was still a win, quick, simple, and a little bit thrilling in the most harmless way.
Just sharing the photos I managed to take tonight.
Have a great night ahead.
