Cloudy Morning Textures in Black and White

By @funtraveller1/2/2026photography

We are having a cloudy sky this morning, and I’m honestly hoping it won’t rain today. The air feels different, there’s a cold wind that makes me pause for a second before stepping outside. We don’t really have winter where I live, but during these early months of the year, it definitely feels colder than usual. It’s like we get a small sample of winter from other parts of the world, carried by the wind.

Since the sky was grey and muted, I knew it would be the perfect time to shoot in black and white.

There’s something about cloudy weather that makes everything softer. The light doesn’t feel harsh, the shadows aren’t too strong, and the contrast becomes more subtle in a way that’s pleasing to the eyes. It’s not the kind of dramatic lighting that screams for attention, it’s quiet, gentle, and it lets texture take the spotlight.

That’s what I tried to focus on in these photos: texture and form.

I captured close details of tree bark, rough surfaces, and leaves that look almost sculpted when the color is removed. In black and white, the small cracks and patterns feel more obvious, like the subject is showing its true character. Even the plant details look more serious and calm, like they’re telling a story without needing bright colors.

I love how this kind of weather helps me slow down. Instead of chasing vibrant scenes, I end up noticing the little things: lines, layers, shapes, and the natural “design” that’s been there all along.

Today’s set feels simple, but it feels complete, just like this morning.

Enjoy the rest of your day.
