Setbacks in push-ups and an intense hour on the bike... my training diary entry from December 23 2025

Hi Actifitters,

first of all, I'd like to wish you all a fantastic Christmas Eve with your loved ones. Have a wonderful time and thank you to everyone who supports me here.

After taking a day off on Monday, things got more intense again yesterday. It started with a somewhat sobering push-up workout. I actually felt strong and expected an improvement in performance, but I was about to be proven wrong. I experienced a decrease in performance in both regular and close-grip push-ups.
The following tables show where I currently stand with regular push-ups.

Current goal (120+):

set 1 set 2 set 3 set 4 set 5 set 6 set 7 set 8 break between sets
13 13 15 15 12 12 10 max (min. 30) 45 seconds

Previous workout (108):

set 1 set 2 set 3 set 4 set 5 set 6 set 7 set 8 break between sets
13 13 15 15 12 12 10 18 45 seconds

Yesterdays workout (102):

set 1 set 2 set 3 set 4 set 5 set 6 set 7 set 8 break between sets
13 13 15 15 12 12 10 18 45 seconds

As you can see I was able to achieve only 102 repetitions in eight sets what means six push-ups less than last time and is far away from my current goal.

Unfortunately, the situation is no different with close-grip push-ups. Here's my performance level in numbers.

Current goal (47+):

set 1 set 2 set 3 set 4 set 5 break between sets
9 11 8 8 max (min. 11) 60 seconds

Previous performance (38):

set 1 set 2 set 3 set 4 set 5 break between sets
9 9 8 7 5 60 seconds

Yesterdays performance (36):

set 1 set 2 set 3 set 4 set 5 break between sets
9 11 8 5 3 60 seconds

It is interesting to see that the number of repetitions achieved already varied in the earlier sets. Overall, there were two fewer repetitions than last time.

With Christmas approaching and diets likely to be less healthy during these days, performance in the following sessions is unlikely to increase significantly. Nevertheless, I have firmly resolved to compensate for the extra Christmas calories with exercise.

There was one success after all, and it was on the bike. The ride lasted one hour and five minutes, including three ten-minute intervals at 180 watts. It was quite a sweaty affair, but ultimately worth it. I was able to raise my FTP to 204 watts.

Today I'm doing pull-ups again. I also want to spend an hour on the indoor trainer to work on my base strength. After that, I have to work from my home office for a few more hours.
In the evening, my wife and I will visit my mother and spend a relaxed Christmas Eve there.
