Part 1 It’s kinda confusing to keep up with the characters. In book 1, at least they all shared a same physical space and interacted with each other. What a varied cast too from a teen to like 70+ woman. Excited to see how they all meet. (I hope they meet).
Martian period drama lmao
I really like Sawyer’s pov so far.
Part 2 I love the report/notes at the start - it adds more perspective to Fleet life. If everyone had some sanitation work experience irl they'd litter less and respect the workers some more…
Tessa’s chapters felt a little boring before but her workplace drama just got interesting. Being threatened to be replaced by AI after you're workplace just got broken into… damn
Isabel and Tasmin are so adorable.
Once a friend loses respect our parents, its hard for them to get it back again. Kip should forget about Ras lol
Part 3 I love how Tesza’s chapters are multi-faceted. Showing different responsibilities in her life.
Ghuh’loloan’s reactions to a human pregnancy were so hilarious Lmaoo but same that thing scares me too.
I really have a bad feeling about sawyer’s new employment.
Part 4 what wowwww i really didn't think he'd die in the last chapter. gravely injured yeah but wow okay. I feel for Eyas 😦 Kip may have lost a friend but he wouldn't carry this weight on his shoulders if he had not confessed what he heard.
Part 5 Aya is understably shaken. First the prologue incident, then bullying in school, now this… fleet life isn't completely safe either.
The funeral affair made me weepy. He didnt even get the opportunity to make friends with these people.
Part 6 i love how on one hand a recent workforce enterant is struggling to figure out what excites him, and then there's another pov of Eyas feeling like her career has hit a dead-end. Tessa:s job being overtaken by machine/AI.
Part 7 Isabel chose to mentor Kip, Eyas turned to holding workshops to share/do a culture exchange course of sorts. How fitting.
Final thoughts - i love Becky Chambers so much for writing such heartwarming stories. Even the typically mundane and boring bits adds so much to the stories. The multiple pov was a little overwhelming at first but I love the simple the structure of the book. I loved Sawyer’s pov so much and was so sad to see him gone so suddenly. His death stirred a lot of conversations particularly from people not wanting ‘outsiders’ to not being allowed on their fleet and use their resources. She subtly addresses prejudice & racism through her stories - it's not all rainbow and sunshine when there are people like Oates who also live on the Fleet, crime still exists (like break ins at Tessa’s work). I really like the discussion about the barter system vs cred system. Overall I really enjoyed this book but not as much as I enjoyed book 2. 3.75 ⭐
