Aaand finished: short and powerful. Poetic justice at its finest. What I am learning about people is that they don't dislike systems of authoritarianism; they actually crave it, so long as they are the ones receiving a benefit from it. In a sense, we all live in a real-life prisoner's dilemma every day, and the majority of people don't realize it.
It's crazy how quickly Martin turned on a dime and went from 'Max, my beloved' to 'Heil Hitler.' I wonder how realistic this was for a lot of people. I suppose that he was quickly lured in by rubbing elbows with local authorities and upper-crust society. Imagine how cushy his life was: guy was making millions easily back in America, moved to Munich, and had a much lower cost of living, didn't have to work, lived in a 30-room mansion, staff of ten... probably bored with nothing to do but run for local office.
'I will no longer have any correspondence with Jews, except in for the receipt of money.' Ah, so you're principled but not too principled, right? How easy it is to become a hypocrite. I give it 4 stars. I actually wish it was much longer.
