This is my contribution to the initiative proposed by @mipiano for this month.

Not long ago, I talked about my conversion from music lover (like many young people of my generation) to vinyl record collector. You can read that post here.

This has forced me to spend some time thinking about a post that could contribute something new, in addition to some beautiful, previously unpublished photos.

Once again, I invite my great friend @soho1958 to participate in this initiative.

No hace tanto que hablé de mi conversión de aficionado a la música (como muchos jóvenes de mi generación) a coleccionista de discos de vinilo. Este publicación la podéis visitar aquí.

Lo que me ha obligado a dedicarle algo de tiempo para pensar en una publicación que pudiera aporta algo nuevo, además de unas bonitas fotos no publicadas con anterioridad.

As I write these first lines, I already have a clear idea of the why and what for of this publication. I am going to try to bring the world of collecting closer to both those who are starting their vinyl record collection and those who are simply curious about the subject.

Formats

The different formats of vinyl records differ from each other in two ways: speed and size.

In terms of size, records can be 7 inches, 10 inches, or 12 inches in diameter.

In terms of playback speed, there are 33 RPM (revolutions per minute) and 45 RPM records.

En el momento que estoy escribiendo estas primeras líneas ya tengo claro el por qué y el para qué de esta publicación. Voy a tratar de aproximar el mundo del coleccionismo tanto a quienes están comenzando su colección de discos de vinilo como a aquellas que tienen alguna curiosidad por el tema.

Formatos

Los diferentes formatos del disco de vinilo se diferencian entre ellos por dos variables: velocidad y tamaño.

Según el tamaño, los discos pueden ser de 7 pulgadas de diámetro, de 10 pulgadas o de 12 pulgadas.

Según su velocidad de reproducción los hay de 33 RPM (revoluciones por minuto) y de 45 RPM.

Therefore, when you see a vinyl record, it could be one of the following:

LP (Long Play): a 17-inch diameter, 33 RPM record. This is the most popular format today. They usually last between 20 and 30 minutes per side.

Single: a 7-inch record with 45 RPM. They have one song per side, each lasting a few minutes. This was a very popular format in the 1960s. In Spain, we had a variant called EP, which had two songs on each side instead of one.

Por lo tanto, cuando ves un disco de vinilo se puede tratar de un:

LP (Long Play): disco de 17 pulgadas diámetro y 33 RPM. Este es el formato más popular en la actualidad. Suelen tener una duración de entre 20 y 30 minutos por cara.

Single: disco de 7 pulgadas y 45 RPM. Tienen una canción por cara y cada una tiene una duración de unos pocos minutos. Fue un formato muy popular en los años 60,s. En España tuvimos una variante llamada EP que en lugar de una tema por cara, tenía 2 en cada cara.

Maxi Single: 17-inch, 45 RPM format. Contains more than one track per side and usually includes extended versions or remixes of a track.

Special editions: in addition to these more traditional formats, there are also others. One example of these curiosities is the album by **Rocío Márquez** recorded in collaboration with Bronquio. An album with two 12-inch 45 RPM discs.

10-inch discs: and 33 RPM. This format is now very rare to find.

Maxi Single: Formato de 17 pulgadas y 45 RPM. Contiene más de un tema por cara y suele contener versiones extendidas o remezclas de un tema.

Ediciones especiales: además de estos formatos más tradicionales también existen otros. Un ejemplo de de estas curiosidades es el álbum de **Rocío Márquez** grabado en colaboración con Bronquio. Un álbum con dos discos de 12 pulgadas de 45 RPM.

Discos de 10 pulgadas: y 33 RPM. Este es un formato ya muy raro de encontrar.

Another reason to enjoy vinyl

Perhaps some of you thought this would be the moment to talk about the virtues of vinyl sound, its warmth, etc., but that's not going to happen here.

There are other reasons. Although the first recordings in vinyl format did not have covers, they were distributed protected by a generic sleeve, and over time some cardboard sleeves containing the vinyl became true works of art.

Among these works of art, I think it's easy to remember the cover of The Velvet Underground with Andy Warhol's banana.

Una (otra) razón para disfrutar del vinilo

Quizás alguien haya pensado que este es el momento de hablar de las bondades del sonido del vinilo, de su calidez, etc. pero no va a ser esta la ocasión.

Hay otro tipo de motivos. Aunque las primeras grabaciones en el formato de vinilo carecían de portada, se distribuían protegidos por una funda generalista, con el tiempo algunas carpetas de cartón que contenían el vinilo se convirtieron en verdaderas obras de arte.

Entre estas obras de arte creo que es fácil recordar la portada de La Velvet con el plátano de Andy Warhol.

There are many more, some truly rare and others more popular. But all designed for one size: vinyl records.

Today I'm leaving you with two records with two very different covers. One is an EP, Patio Flamenco, with a fold-out cover that opens up to reveal a cardboard flamenco courtyard.

The other work is the fold-out cover of an LP by Funkadelic, created by the great artist **Pedro Bell**. A work created with the size of an LP cover in mind.

Hay muchas más, algunas verdaderas rarezas y otras más populares. Pero todas pensadas para en un tamaño: los soportes de vinilo.

Hoy dejo aquí dos discos con dos portadas muy diferentes. Una es un EP, Patio Flamenco, con una portada desplegable que al abrirse da vida a un patio flamenco de cartón.

La otra obra es la portada desplegable de un LP de Funkadelic cuyo autoria es del gran artista **Pedro Bell**. Una obra realizada teniendo en cuenta el tamaño de la portada de un LP.

Now it's time to show you what I believe to be the two most expensive records in my collection. How do I know they're the most expensive?

There is a kind of Facebook for collectors of recorded music in its various formats (analog and digital), which is Discogs.

On this website, you can search for recordings by almost any artist, see the formats in which they were released, and the different editions of these recordings.

The album by **Notorious B.I.G.** is a first US edition in LP format that is highly sought after by collectors. The other album is a very rare recording, with only one small-run edition.

Este es el momento de mostrar los que creo que son los dos discos más caros de mi colección. ¿Cómo se que son los más caros?

Existe una especie de Facebook para coleccionistas de música grabada en sus diferentes soportes (analógicos y digitales) que es Discogs.

En esta página web puedes buscar las grabaciones de casi cualquier artista, ver los formatos en los que publicó y las diferentes ediciones de éstas.

El disco de **Notorius Big**, es una primera edición de EE.UU en formato LP que es muy buscada por coleccionistas. El otro disco es una grabación muy rara, con una sola edición de tirada pequeña.

The price of records

Many people believe that having a dozen vinyl records at home means they have a treasure trove. It may well be a treasure trove in terms of sentimental value, but there really aren't that many records that are treasures.

The price of a record is not related to the quality of the music it contains, nor to its popularity.

As in the case of books, first editions are the most valuable to collectors. However, being a first edition does not guarantee anything.

El precio de los discos

Mucha gente cree que por tener una docena de discos de vinilo en su casa ya tiene un tesoro. Probablemente sea un tesoro por su valor sentimental.Reamente no hay tantos discos-tesoro.

El precio de un disco no está relacionado con la calidad de la música que pueda contener, ni con su popularidad.

Como en el caso de los libros, las primeras ediciones son las que más valor tienen para los coleccionistas. Aunque ser una primera edición no garantiza nada.

A first edition Julio Iglesias record is worth the sum of its weight in cardboard and vinyl. Due to the millions of records sold, each piece has little value.

It may also be the case that a community of music lovers is not in the habit of buying recordings by their favorite artists.

This is the case in the world of flamenco. This community mainly consumes live music, so flamenco records are in low demand and therefore quite affordable.

For a record to fetch a high price, it must be a rarity and, at the same time, there must be high demand for that rarity.

Una primera edición de un disco de Julio Iglesias vale la suma de su peso en cartón y vinilo. Solamente por la cantidad de millones de discos vendidos cada pieza tiene un escaso valor.

También puede ocurrir que una comunidad de amantes de la música no tenga la costumbre de comprar grabaciones de sus artistas favoritos.

Esto ocurre en el mundo del Flamenco. Una comunidad que consume música principalmente en vivo por lo que los discos de flamenco tienen poca demanda y, por tanto, un precio bastante asequible.

Para que un disco alcance un gran precio de venta tiene que ser una rareza y al mismo tiempo tiene que existir una gran demanda de esa rareza.

Being scarce and in high demand does not guarantee a good price for the vinyl record we have in our hands.

It is also necessary to take into account other factors such as the condition of the record, the condition of the sleeve, and whether or not it still has the extras that may have accompanied the record when it was released: a sheet with the lyrics of the songs, a promotional sheet, a photo or poster of the artist or band, etc.

All these details are standardized.

So when someone buys a record online, information about the condition of the record usually appears with symbols like these:

M Mint/ NM, M−/ VG+, Very Good Plus/ VG, Very Good/ G+, Good (Plus)/ Fair, Poor

Ser escaso y contar con gran demanda tampoco garantiza un buen precio para ese vinilo que tenemos en nuestras manos.

También es necesario tener en cuenta otros factores como el estado de conservación del disco, el estado de conservación de la carpeta, si conserva o no conserva los extras que pudieran acompañar al disco cuando se editó: una hoja con las letras de las canciones, una hoja promocional, una foto o póster del artista o conjunto musical, etc.

Todo estos detalles están estandarizados.

De tal manera que cuando alguien compra un disco online, suele aparecer la información del estado del disco con signos como estos:

M Mint/ NM, M−/ VG+, Very Good Plus/ VG, Very Good/ G+, Good (Plus)/ Fair, Poor

Signs that help us determine the condition of the record and estimate its price.

According to Discogs, my collection of around 4,000 vinyl records is worth between €20,000 and €79,000.

If all my records were in very good condition (M Mint, NM), my collection would be close to the higher value. If all the records in my collection were unplayable (Fair, Poor) due to wear and tear on the vinyl, and the covers were all torn, its value would be closer to the lower end of the range.

The state of health of the vinyl record

This section will be very brief; I will just provide some data. In 1977, around 350 million new vinyl records were sold worldwide; today, around 50 million are sold. Until the mid-1980s, it was the format that dominated the recorded music market. Today, it represents a tiny fraction of recorded music consumption.

Signos que nos ayudan a conocer el estado del disco y poder estimar su precio.

Según Discogs, mi colección que cuenta con unos 4000 discos de vinilo, tiene un valor de ente 20,000 y 79.000 euros.

Si todos mis discos estuvieran en muy buen estado (M Mint, NM) mi colección estaría cercana al valor mayor. Si todos los discos de mi colección no se pudieran escuchar (Fair, Poor), por el desgaste del vinilo, y las portadas estuvieran todas rotas su valor sería cercana al valor más bajo.

El estado de salud del vinilo

Este apartado va a ser muy breve, sólo voy a dejar datos. En 1977 se vendieron en el mundo unos 350 millones de discos de vinilo nuevos; en la actualidad se venden unos 50 millones. Hasta mediados de los años 80´s fue el sporte que dominó el mercado de la música grabada. En la actualidad, representa una mínima parte del consumo de la música grabada.
