This week prompt is a mind blowing one, I mean writing about one's favourite subject is a captivating idea. While I was taught many subjects in both elementary and high school, bamong all these subjects Literature stand tall in all. I mean both Literature in English and that of my mother tongue, Yoruba Literature.
Literature has been my constant support and companion. A source of inspiration, Comfort and growth. I can say that from the moment I learnt how to read, I fell in love with literature, and literature of course has never left my thoughts. As I grew older, literature has sharpened my horizon, it has contributed to my growth, growing up,there are many times I stayed awake in the middle of the night, reading literary text, so that I will finish reading it, returned to the owner and borrow another one, either from school library or a class mates. I can proudly says literature eventually influence my course of study in university which is English Language and Education. And you can not of course remove Literature from English Language. You can't study any language course without a broad knowledge in it's literature. For me literature is more than a subject, but a passion that has enriched my life in countless ways and am eager to share it with you.
You might want to ask me, why literature of all the subjects in High School? Well, I picked Literature today of all the subjects and will still do tomorrow because of so many reasons I will write few out of it in this write up.
Imagination and Creativity; Literature is that subjects that spark out one's sense of imagination and creativity. A teacher will ask a class to write a theme in particular literary book, and they will come out with different beautiful narration or themes. It is only literature that has that beauty and aesthetics.
Critical Thinking; Studying and analysing literature helps one to develop critical thinking skills, which will helps to evaluate arguments, values and themes.
Language and Communication Skill; Oh my, Literature sharpened one's language and communication skills, talk of figures of speech, ambiguity, point of view, styles, characterisation, proverbs etc. All these eventually polished my speaking and writing
proficiency.
Entertainment and Relaxation; Give it to literature on that aspect. It's class is never boring, as learners and teacher are purching their emotions while reading or analysing literature, laughter and relaxing mood will be activated.
Cultural Heritage; I remembered some literature text I studied in university i.e Beowulf, Ola Rotimi 'the gods are not blame' which is adaptation of king Oedipus Sophocles, Femi Osofisan 'women of owu', Ola Rotimi 'Kurumi' etc. All these literary text preserve culture, values and even spreads across past histories. And that is another literary elements. It gives insight to the past, history and connect to present and future.
Lastly, I will talk on the personal growth effect literature had on me. Literature has helped my communication proficiency, relationship with friends and family, help me appreciate nature, gives me insight to past, history, present and future.
As I reflect on my journey with literature, I realized every page of story I reads is a work of literature,
I have encountered diverse perspectives,my skills has been polished, and I will always go for literature as my favourite subject.
