Hi!

Hello everyone!

First of all, let's get that verification step over with 😄.

This is me. Edwin van Rooij.

I'm a Dutch software engineer!

I've been a Steemian for two whole days right now. Impressive, I know. The way I got in touch with Steem(It), is through my coworker @gindor. He seemed to really like the concept, so we talked more about it. It did not take him long to convince me to join as well, so here I am!

As a 21 year-old student, studying software engineering, I'm actually currently doing an internship at the company of previously mentioned coworker! I'm really enjoying my time there, but that's not the reason I'm writing this post.

Why am I here?

Of course, there's a lot to answer that one question. It all started at Maplestory! When I was about 14 years, I used to play the game a lot. No, seriously, a lot. Me and my friends would make a schedule to be able to play the game together, depending on when each one of us could use the computer! We would stay up until way past our bed times, just to level up.

Anyway, that time passed. Many friends had quit the game and started playing something else, or even quit gaming altogether. There's this one friend I kept playing with, but in the end, after many changes to the game, we decided to move on as well. But not completely. We found out about these things called 'private servers'. After playing on those, I really wanted to have one by myself. To be the admin of 'my own' game, so I did. At sixteen years old I had my own Maplestory Private Server, which was a huge deal to me back then! On a good day, I would have 20 active online players. I was really proud of that, especially considering I was hosting the game on my own laptop. The game would just go off when I had to go sleep, players sometimes begged me to leave the laptop on for the night (which I sometimes did)!

On YakuzaMS's final days, it reached #7 on the most popular private server ranking GTop100

To everything comes an end, and so did my career as a 'game administrator'. I saw programming new features to the game as a hobby, nothing more. I went on to follow a bachelor's degree on Tourism Management right after closing the private server. I quit the education in the first year.

I could not bring up the motivation to finish that first year, knowing it would have no use to me in the end

It occured to me that maybe, maybe programming could be more than just a hobby. Well, it turned out to become the best thing that's ever happened to me.

I am now studying the Bachelor's Degree ICT - Software engineering & Cyber Security at Fontys Hogescholen in Eindhoven, and I'm absolutely loving it!

What to expect of me?

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure yet.

There's lots of things I could talk about.

I've created some Android applications, an online groceries app, which you can share with your family. Recently a TrackMyFuel app, dedicated to keeping track of your fuel records.

In the past couple of months, I've learned a completely different keyboard layout, Dvorak, as opposed to the standard Qwerty. I did this in the spirit of becoming more efficient at programming.

Over the past year, I've mastered the text editor Vim, also in the spirit of becoming more efficient.

Obviously, I'm quite the keyboard enthusiast. I like to improve myself.

So, if there's anything you'd like to learn more about, don't hesitate to contact me!
If you'd like me to write more about any of the topics above, or anything else at all, reply in the comments!

Have a good day fellow Steemians!
