In the vast mountainous space of Mang Den, where pine hills stretch out and fog covers the way, the resounding sound of gongs is like the heartbeat of the soul of the Central Highlands mountains and forests. For the Xo Dang people - one of the indigenous peoples who have long lived in this land, gongs are not only musical instruments, but also a connection between people and gods, between the community and ancestral traditions.
In the spiritual life of the Xo Dang people, gongs are sacred sounds, resounding in large and small festivals such as the new rice celebration, the rain-praying ceremony, the village worship ceremony or the grave-leaving ceremony... Each sound, each gong beat has its own meaning, passed down from generation to generation through the hands, ears and hearts of the gong artisans in the village.
Every weekend, when the fire burns in the middle of Mang Den Weekly Market, the gongs begin to move, the old and the young hold hands, and join in the sound of the gongs. This event always atrract many tourists from all over the country. The melody does not need a musical scale but is still tight and harmonious, like the breath of the mountains and forests, like the voices of ancestors echoing back.
The Xo Dang people in Mang Den believe that gongs are the dwelling place of the gods, a way for them to communicate with the invisible world and express their gratitude to heaven, earth, forests, and water. Each gong has a “soul”, and is carefully preserved and cared for like a sacred treasure.
Today, although modern life is creeping into every village, in Mang Den, gong culture is still alive and preserved as a part of flesh and blood. Not only is it an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, the gongs here are also a proud symbol of the Xo Dang people, the sound of identity, of memory, and of faith in a future where traditional culture continues to resonate in the great forest.
