The movie Joy is not how I would expect the movie to be about. You would think based off the title of the movie that it would be happy and well, joyful. Once I started watching this movie you can see how entrepreneurship and society play an important role together. You can also see how marketing plays a big role in entrepreneurship. This movie is a great representation of how society needs entrepreneurs. This is a great movie to show how to overcome the obstacles that get in your way of your dreams and how nothing can stop your ideas and dreams.
Joy shows great detail of entrepreneurs make and pitch their ideas. Joy Mangano is a single mother with two kids that is barely making it. She is having a hard time paying her bills and she also has majority of her family living in this house with her including her ex-husband, Tony Miranne. After many hours of frustration and heart break so comes up with an invention of a mop that can self-ring and made fully of cotton. This product originally did not sell to anyone in the beginning but as soon as she promoted it herself and marketed it then the calls and sales came rolling in. When she was making the sales, she found out that the company that has been making the product for her was stealing her designs. She later becomes big inventor and entrepreneur that helps other pursue their dreams just like see did. The reason that this movie shows entrepreneurship is because it shows that a woman grew up with nothing, but an idea and she never thought that she was going to be able to make that idea a reality. How all entrepreneurs start is with an idea then make it come true. In this movie you can see that it took her to make the idea known, not anyone else. The company that helped her get started tried to get an actor to do it. The actor did not know how to work the invention so he could not promote it. When she got up there and sold her idea then the sales kept going up.
This movie was interesting because it showed how a person that comes from a family that has a little bit of money then goes to nothing then back to having money again. My favorite part was when she got on the stage and showed how her mop worked because the guy couldn’t get the product to function like it should. That just shows that the one that created the product has the better understanding of how the product works. I also really enjoyed when she was in the hotel room in Dallas with that guy that stole her idea. She knew what she was talking about and knew how much money she deserved because that guy was fraudulent. These moments not only showed how powerful and stern she can be to get her way but shows how the economy and society use people for their ideas and money. At the end of the movie, it shows even though her family tries to sue her and take her money, she stands by them no matter what because that is how important they are to her. She always prioritized her family before her career.
In this movie, the big idea is to show how the society and entrepreneurs work together and shows their differences. Looking in Joy’s perspective, you can see the struggle when she tells her family and the people closest to her about her idea and they basically say that it is bad, and no one would buy it. I would be heartbroken that those that love and care about me could not believe in me. She did have her ex-husband and her best friend that stood by her side the whole time and showed their belief in her throughout her career. One way that the movie showed the interaction between society and entrepreneurship was when Joy stood outside the store and marketed and promoted her product. Even though no one was watching or cared about it, the fact that she still did that was what needed to get people’s attention even if they think it didn’t catch their eye. How the aspect of entrepreneurship affects society is without entrepreneurship there would be nothing for the society to buy, eat, drink, etc. Entrepreneurs create everything that this world has and without them then who is there to create it? Yes, you have producers and inventors, but entrepreneurs are people that have an idea and make it come to life, and without that what does the world have to offer? How the society affects and supports entrepreneurs is society is what helps produce the ideas. Without people complaining or saying “it would be better if we had this” then entrepreneurs would never have anything to create. They are what give us the idea of becoming entrepreneurs. They see the flaws and we fix them with a new idea. Entrepreneurs and society have to work together to create something, or it won’t work. Yes, entrepreneurs don’t go around asking people what issues they see in the world, but they do see when there is a lack of imagination or product in the world. I would say, as of right now, society and entrepreneurs I think are struggling with keeping the two working together. The reason for this is because society is beginning to be more conservative with their issues and a lot of businesses let them stay inside their house and order online. With that, it can be hard for entrepreneurs to see what the society’s wants and needs are so they can’t create a new idea.
Joy is a movie that shows overcoming your fears and doubts and to do what you have always wanted to do. She did not give up on her dream, she pursued it. With this movie, it gives a great picture of how entrepreneurs and society have and need each other to work together. Society helps bring entrepreneurs together and helps them create what is needed for the economy, and it helps the economy.
