Entitlement

The word 'entitlement' has two different meanings, and sliding between those new meanings is being used to rob you.

The first meaning applies to things to which you are actually entitled because you have bought and paid for them. If you hand over the money for car, you are now entitled to the use and ownership of the car, and the new owner is entitled to the use and ownership of the money you paid.

The second meaning applies to things to which you feel entitled, despite not having earned them. Someone who thinks that s/he should simply be able to walk into a very lucrative job without studying or developing knowledge and skills, for example, would be 'entitled' in this sense.

Now, things like superannuation in Australia or Social Society in America are things that people have paid into, either directly through payroll deductions or through taxes. They are entitled to their pension payments, because they have bought and paid for them.

But neoliberals and their ilk try to pretend that the second sense of the word applies, when it does not. It is an attempt to steal something bought and paid for.

It should be resisted with all our strength.
