Jerome was once a bustling copper mining town -- on of the largest in the US. Founded in the late 19th century, it once boasted 10,000 people with now only slightly more than 450 residents.
Today, many of the towns original buildings are preserved and displayed as tourist enjoy its rich history, small arts and craft stores, boutiques, dining, and breathtaking views. We enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend there and were able to snap some pictures that only capture some of the essence and feel of this small town.
These pictures show how the town was built in tiers on Cleopatra hill.
There is a full-functioning fire station (although the original is memorialized elsewhere in the town). The Grand Hotel is perched at a high elevation gives breathtaking views into Sedona an Flagstaff.
We stayed at the Hotel Connor on Main Street. The room were well preserved but the walls were very thin!
There is also a "Ghost Town" for tourists to visit. It preserves much of the defunct town infrastructure from its bygone era and has become a grave yard for old equipment and vehicles.
