The tree of civilization has its roots deep in spiritual values which most of us have not realised. Without these roots the leaves would have withered and left the tree a lifeless stump. The Buddha advised us not to be lazy, but to get up and do some work and try to gain some income and protect what we have earned without wasting it. The Buddha saw worldly life in its proper perspective, without any selfish or egoistic attitude.

On the other hand, the Buddha tells us that if we allow this life to go round and round in the cycle of birthâand death, while suffering physically and mentally, there is no real purpose of this life. But we can make use of this life for a better purpose by being of service to others, by cultivating morality, by training the mind and living as cultured people in peaceâ and harmony with the rest of the world. According to the Buddha, human beings are not puppets devoid of responsibilities. Man is regarded as the highest fruit of the tree of evolution.

All of us experience unsatisfactoriness. How many times a day do we experience this? We can never be satisfied with whatever we gain because we want something else as soon as we get it. We want to give up something as soon as we gain it because it loses its attractiveness. We call this Impermanence. So throughout our lives we struggle to grasp at things, and we always experience unsatisfactoriness because we ourselves and the things we grasp are constantly changing.

To be really happy we must overcome this human weakness. The struggle to realize why we are unhappy, should be the aim in our life. We all like to lead very happy, contented and peaceful lives but how many of us can really experience such happiness?

We are willing to do anything in everyway possible to gain satisfaction but it is very difficult to experience true satisfaction. Suffering, in this life, comes from three main causes:
(a) conflict with nature;
(b) conflict with other human beings; and
(c) conflict with ourselves.

A huge percentage of the suffering we experience is brought about through man's inhumanity to man. It can manifest itself as the antics of the practical joker, who under the cloak of good fun, makes the lives of his friends and family miserable. Or we find it in the surly individual who inflicts his unhappiness on others. The extreme men in conflict with men created the war bringing death and destruction on a worldwide scale they have never known or met. Therefore this war among humans âhas gone on for thousands of years and even has its counterpart in the animal kingdom.

The solution to conflict is not in reforming the world at large, but in reforming ourselves. The Dhamma will place us in a better relationship with things as they exist and will guide us along the road until suffering ceases. The Buddha has shown us that although we can help others to find the path, we cannot give salvation to others. However before we try to help others,â we should help ourselves, by striving for spiritual perfection.
