Taking advantage of my brother’s visit, who lives in a distant city, we decided to spend some time at the beach. After all, it’s close to Caracas, and in less than an hour, you can reach a beach that’s not too crowded—or at least that’s what we hoped for.
Aprovechando la visita de mi hermano, que vive en una ciudad lejana, decidimos ir a pasar un rato a la playa. Después de todo, queda cerca de Caracas, y en menos de una hora es posible llegar a una playa no tan concurrida, o al menos eso esperábamos.
It was a traditional outing in the sense that we did everything they recommend not to do when visiting La Guaira, and that locals often attribute to people from Caracas: leaving late, arriving at a crowded beach, going on a holiday, and dealing with all the traffic on the way back. The main road was congested not only due to the high influx of tourists but also because of a carnival parade that practically brought traffic to a halt for two hours.
Fue una salida tradicional, en el sentido de que hicimos todo lo que recomiendan no hacer al visitar La Guaira y que los locales suelen atribuir a los caraqueños: salir tarde, llegar a una playa llena de gente, ir en un día feriado y enfrentar todo el tráfico de regreso. La arteria vial estaba congestionada no solo por la alta afluencia de turistas, sino también por una comparsa de carnaval que prácticamente detuvo el tráfico durante dos horas.
However, I can say that, although it may sound contradictory, the entire outing was quite relaxing, partly thanks to the temperament of the people I was with. The beach, though crowded, had a rather family-friendly atmosphere, which balanced out the experience. The sea was a bit rough, so our dips in the water were short, but people always find a way to have a good time.
Sin embargo, puedo decir que, aunque suene contradictorio, todo el paseo fue bastante relajado, en parte gracias al temperamento de las personas con las que fui. La playa, aunque concurrida, tenía un ambiente más bien familiar, algo que equilibraba la experiencia. El mar estaba algo revuelto, por lo que las zambullidas fueron cortas, pero la gente siempre se las ingenia para pasar un buen rato.
On our way back, we stopped at a bustling arepera right by the sea. Even though it was late, the place was quite full. However, the service was faster than I expected, and the quality of the arepas exceeded my expectations. And of course, I chose a seafood filling with shrimp and squid, one of the house’s recommendations!
Ya de regreso, fuimos a una concurrida arepera literalmente a orillas del mar. Aunque ya era tarde, el lugar estaba bastante lleno. Sin embargo, el servicio fue más rápido de lo que esperaba y la calidad de las arepas superó mis expectativas, y por supuesto que elegí un relleno marino con camarones y calamares, una de las recomendaciones de la casa!
