The Last Life

I didn't remember how I had ended up on the floor; all I knew is that I couldn't move, and everything was hot, really hot. Unbearably hot. I began to cough, my head ached and my eyes were stinging. I had been in this situation before, it was a nightmare I've had many times. I felt trapped, all I wanted to do was to escape but, you can't. No matter how hard you try, you can never escape what fate has in store for you. Be it, drowning in a stormy ocean, being hit by speeding cars, or being pressed by a great weight from all sides, death waits for you and doesn't sleep, he bides his time.

"Hello?" I asked into the darkness, hoping that somebody would answer. I heard nothing, just the crackling of flames and creaking of the old decaying mansion. I felt the floor move, the fire was closing in. The place was about to collapse. The stranger that I loved with all my being had promised to save me, why wasn't he here?

I heard the footsteps of the servant that had saved me earlier, she was crying as she carried a large framed portrait of a family outside.

''Thank you, dear,'' I said. She fell to the ground, but she stood back up and walked to me.

The frail servant's grin faded and I could see the terror in her eyes.

"What is wrong, then?" I asked, trying to ease her mind.

"I… I can't save you, Ms. Rose," she said, her voice trembling.

"What are you talking about?" I asked. "What do you mean you can't save me?"

"Lady, the house is on fire, we both can see how it all devours the place. You, even if you can escape, the house won't last much longer. I can't save you, Ms. Rose," she said.

''But, how? How can we escape together if you don't know how you can save me?" I asked her.

She started screaming and crying even more, then she grabbed a pendant from around her neck and started smashing it on the floor, desperate to destroy the strange object.

''Have you gone mad?" I asked her, trying get her to stop her senseless rampage.

She didn't listen, she kept crying and smashing her pendant, finally, I gave up and watched as the servant threw the remains of the pendant into the flames. The remains of the pendant caught fire and burned up.

"Now it is too late," she cried, pulling me into a hug.

"What are you talking about?" I said. "If you destroyed the pendant, you have doomed us all!"

She didn't answer, instead she continued to weep into my shoulder. Suddenly, the flames rushed up and filled my vision, draining the servant of all of her colour. She broke into a fine mist and was soon absorbed by the flames.

You see, the pendant that the servant had destroyed was a red jewel that dealt with fate. It had the power to grant any wish that its wearer could wish for.

However, the stone was soaked with poison, along with the magic it had. So, once the stone was destroyed, the poison continued to work. The poison felt no mercy, not even for the one that wished for it, it would take everything, it would take every memory, every good feeling, every person that you want to meet, they would be consumed by the flames. Then, you would forget everything, even yourself.

I fell onto my back, the floor was cracking and the ceiling above was starting to crumble. I was about to die, I could feel it. I could only hope for my love to save me as he had before, only this time, I knew that I would never be saved. I closed my eyes and allowed the flames to consume me. I was ready to face my fate, whatever it may bring.

Of course, my fate was to be rescued by my beautiful love.

I woke up on the floor, there was no fire and the mansion was intact. I looked to my left, there was a girl sleeping with a red jewel pendant around her neck, it was the servant girl who I had conversed with earlier. She had destroyed the pendant to keep me from dying. She was my savior; because of her I had a second chance at life.

I stood up and gave a sigh of relief, everything was fine.

"Well that's a relief. I thought I was going to die," I said, hoping to reassure the girl that everything was fine.

"Oh, good morning Ms. Rose," she answered and smiled. I noticed then that she had a mark on her forehead and that she had a silver strand of hair.

My hair was also a silver color and I was also wearing the same necklace that she had. The pendant around my neck was the same one that the servant had destroyed and from the family portrait that I saw in the house, that was the same necklace that I wore.

I suddenly remembered what the servant had told me, she couldn't save me because the pendant that she had was the only thing capable of saving me and now it was destroyed.

I tried to move her from her bed, but she was frozen to the spot, perhaps she was still asleep?

I picked her up and took her outside. The scenery was that of a field surrounded by a forest, both had a comforting aura to them.

"It's so quiet out here," I said, trying to calm my nerves.

I heard a noise behind me and turned to see my love in the flesh, wearing his best clothes and a smile.

"Hello darling," he said.

I felt a rush of relief, then I knew that everything will be alright.

"How did you get her out of the house so quickly?" I asked him.

"I removed her from the house, of course," he answered. "It was the least that I could do for you."

My smile faded, then I realised that my love was not the man that I knew and loved.

"How long have we been together?" I asked him. He looked at me confused.

"I do not know, I don't remember," he answered.

My smile faded further, he didn't remember anything about me, about us. How bizarre this situation was.

I felt a tear on my cheek and I wiped it away.

"Why are there so many tears in your eyes, Ms. Rose?" he asked me.

"Because I don't know who I am with any more," I answered.

With those words, I heard my body dissolve together with the light; and I felt nothing, a void within a void.

When I came back to my body, I was on the floor again. I looked around and saw the servant girl frozen to the spot as before, where had she gone?

I approached the fireplace, often a good location to lean on when thinking. I felt a sudden urge to sit, but I resisted.

"What do you want now?" I asked. "I thought I was destined, to die in the fire."

I closed my eyes, thinking, trying to remember anything, anything at all, but the flames consumed my words and the floor, the room, the house; everything was consumed. I felt like I was dead and nothing, but still, I felt something. I felt alive, as though I had memories.
