Soaring Over the Canyon

You know what else you can watch forever, besides water and fire? Birds soaring. Especially when you find a spot where you can watch them from above.

Last year I made it to the viewpoint over the Uvac River canyon in Serbia — and managed to capture griffon vultures in flight.

The griffon vulture isn't the largest of the vultures, but one of the most striking. A wingspan of up to three meters, pale buff plumage with black wingtips, and a bare white head.

In flight it barely flaps — it catches the updrafts above the canyon and circles for hours, scanning the space below. These birds nest only on sheer cliffs in remote gorges, so getting close is nearly impossible.

Uvac has become one of the last reliable refuges for these birds in Europe.

Thank you for stopping by!
