Are You Clearly Seeing Your Future?

2025-05-10T10:11:48

If we're honest, we've all felt stuck at some point, unsure of where our lives are headed or whether what we're doing truly matters. Many people spend their days reacting to circumstances instead of proactively creating a better future. On the other hand, some seem to achieve their goals effortlessly. The difference between those who move forward and those who remain in the same place often comes down to one key factor: They have a written Life Vision.

A life vision is a clear mental image of a better future, based on a solid understanding of our values, who we are, and our circumstances. It is an inspiring and challenging picture of the future that we believe is possible and that we want to build.

Why is a Life Vision Important?

Stephen Covey, in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, emphasizes the importance of beginning with a clear goal in mind. When you define exactly what success means to you—what it looks like, how it feels, and how you experience it—you create a powerful mental roadmap that guides your actions. Without this clarity, you may stay busy but not necessarily moving forward in any meaningful direction. This is what I call living on autopilot: working, socializing, and handling daily responsibilities without a clear purpose, simply because “it has to be done.”

Don’t get me wrong—there are things beyond our control that we simply must do. But when you take the time to visualize where you want to go and the aspirations you want to achieve, your actions become intentional, and your daily decisions align with your bigger vision.

Think of Your Life Like a GPS

Imagine this: You’re visiting an unfamiliar place and want to see a famous landmark. You’re at your hotel and have rented a car for the day. Knowing you have no idea how to get there, would you get in the car and start driving in a random direction, hoping you’ll arrive by chance? Unthinkable, right? In that situation, the logical step would be to set your GPS to a specific location first.

The same principle applies to life in general. Without a clear destination, you risk wandering aimlessly, missing opportunities to build the life you truly want. Having a clear vision of a better future helps you define your personal and professional goals—as well as the strategy to achieve them—with precision. It ensures that your efforts and habits serve a purpose rather than simply filling time.

Here are Some Simple Steps to Write a Life Vision

  1. Define What Success Looks Like – If you’ve already written down your 8-10 most important values and described them, you’ve made great progress. If not, check out my previous newsletter.
  2. Create a Mental Picture – Close your eyes and imagine achieving your goals. What does it look like? How does it feel? Who is with you?
  3. Write in the Present Tense – Instead of saying "I WILL do this," write "I am DOING this." This trains your mind to act accordingly.
  4. Measure Your Progress – Set specific, measurable goals (e.g., instead of "I want to be healthier," say "I exercise three times a week and maintain a balanced diet").
  5. Revisit and Adjust Regularly – Your vision may evolve, so keep refining it as you grow.

Let’s Talk About It
