Today I'm going to talk about something that's been discussed a lot lately, but that still needs to be addressed: AI.
As a science fiction writer, I'm not at all unfamiliar with it. I remember the first time I heard about artificial intelligence in any depth. It was in a conversation with other writers, and the general tone was one of concern, even fear.
But they weren't talking about literature. They weren't talking about film or fiction. Some spoke of them as if they were an army of workers coming to take our jobs, to make us obsolete, to render our profession worthless.
At that moment, I felt that same chill. But over time, and after becoming familiar with the tool, I came to a different conclusion. AIs are neither friends nor enemies. They are tools. And like all tools, their value depends on how we use them.
I began using artificial intelligence in my writing process. Not to have it write for me—I would never allow that. Writing is my voice, my way of being in the world.
But I use it to revise, to look for grammatical errors, inconsistencies, to do quick searches that used to take me hours.
It's as if I've gained a tireless assistant, someone who doesn't get tired, who doesn't get offended, who is available when I need them. And that doesn't take away work, it makes it easier. It allows me to dedicate more time to what really matters: thinking, creating, shaping what I want to say.
I've seen colleagues who reject technology on principle. They pride themselves on not using certain tools, as if that makes them purer. And I respect that; everyone has their own path (even though they use AI daily, on multiple devices and appliances).
But I've also seen many who, after trying it, have changed their minds. Because artificial intelligence isn't magic; it's simply an evolution of our work. Like the typewriter, like the computer, like the internet.
At the time, each of those innovations generated fear. And yet, here we are, writing in word processors and communicating by email.
There are things that AI will never be able to do. You won't be able to feel what a parent feels when they lose a child, you won't be able to understand the complexity of a human relationship, you won't be able to write from the real experience of pain or joy.
That is ours; it's irreplaceable.
But there are also things that we couldn't do without it. Process enormous amounts of data in seconds, find patterns that escape the human eye, automate tedious tasks. The question isn't whether we use it, but how.
He decided not to be afraid of it. He decided to learn. Because what is unknown is frightening. And what is learned is mastered. Artificial intelligence isn't going to disappear because we ignore it.
It's here to stay, and the sensible thing to do is to take advantage of it.
I don't see it as a competitor, but as an ally. An extension of my own capabilities. Fire can burn your house down or warm your home. It all depends on how you use it. I prefer to learn how to control fire.

Voy a hablar hoy de algo que se ha hablado muchísimo en estos días, pero de lo que aún es necesario hablar: la IA.
Como escritor de ciencia ficción, no me son desconocidas en absoluto. Recuerdo la primera vez que oí hablar de las inteligencias artificiales con cierta profundidad. Fue en una conversación con otros escritores, y el tono general era de preocupación, incluso de miedo.
Pero no hablaban de literatura. No hablaban de cine ni de ficción. Algunos hablaban de ellas como si fueran un ejército de obreros que venía a quitarnos el trabajo, a dejarnos obsoletos, a convertir nuestra profesión en algo sin valor.
En ese momento, yo también sentí ese escalofrío. Pero con el tiempo, y después de familiarizarme con la herramienta, he llegado a una conclusión distinta. Las IAs no son ni amigas ni enemigas. Son herramientas. Y como todas las herramientas, su valor depende del uso que les demos.
He empezado a utilizar la inteligencia artificial en mi proceso de escritura. No para que escriba por mí, eso jamás lo permitiría. La escritura es mi voz, mi forma de estar en el mundo.
Pero la uso para revisar, buscar errores gramaticales, incoherencias, para hacer búsquedas rápidas que antes me llevaban horas.
Es como si hubiera ganado un asistente incansable, alguien que no se cansa, que no se ofende, que está disponible cuando lo necesito. Y eso no me quita trabajo, me lo facilita. Me permite dedicar más tiempo a lo que realmente importa: pensar, crear, dar forma a lo que quiero decir.
He visto a colegas que rechazan la tecnología por principio. Se enorgullecen de no usar ciertas herramientas, como si eso los hiciera más puros. Y lo respeto, cada uno tiene su camino (a pesar que utilizan IAs a diario, en múltiples dispositivos y electrodomésticos).
Pero también he visto a muchos que, después de probarlas, han cambiado de opinión. Porque la inteligencia artificial no es magia, es simplemente una evolución de nuestro quehacer. Como lo fue la máquina de escribir, como lo fue el ordenador, como lo fue internet.
En su momento, cada una de esas innovaciones generó miedo. Y sin embargo, aquí estamos, escribiendo en procesadores de texto y comunicándonos por correo electrónico.
Hay cosas que la IA no podrá hacer nunca. No podrá sentir lo que siente un padre cuando pierde un hijo, no podrá entender la complejidad de una relación humana, no podrá escribir desde la experiencia real del dolor o la alegría.
Eso es nuestro, es intransferible.
Pero hay cosas que sin ella tampoco podríamos hacer. Procesar enormes cantidades de datos en segundos, encontrar patrones que al ojo humano se le escapan, automatizar tareas tediosas. La cuestión no es si la usamos, sino cómo.
He decidido no tenerle miedo. He decidido aprender. Porque lo que no se conoce, asusta. Y lo que se aprende, se domina. La inteligencia artificial no va a desaparecer porque nosotros la ignoremos.
Está aquí para quedarse, y lo sensato es sacarle partido.
No la veo como una competidora, sino como una aliada. Una extensión de mis propias capacidades. El fuego puede quemar tu casa o calentar tu hogar. Todo depende de cómo lo uses. Yo prefiero aprender a controlar el fuego.
