Ibiza is world famous for its beaches and nightlife, but few visitors to the island know that the capital's old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The walled citadel, called Dalt Vila in the local language, began to be developed by the early Phoenician settlers due to its strategic position, and remained the centre of the city until the 19th century.
