The crib was empty, of course. Ava was with them.
But the rocking chair was moving, slowly. Back and forth.
And then, a flicker of a little girl's face, on the edge of the screen.
She stood near the chair, long hair falling over her face. She turned, lifting her head just slightly, and looked directly into the camera.
The screen glitched. Then went dark.

“You will all go to university, graduate with good results and make me a proud mother of graduates” she would tell us, forcing cheer into her voice, “you’ll all go to university one day. I believe it.”
“No, Mummy,” I would reply, curling up beside her on the bed. “Daddy said that you would only be able to send us to the university if pigs can fly.”
Her smile would flicker, almost break.
“Then I will make them fly, my dear. I will.”

Silently, she opened the clinic door and walked in to find Adaeze standing by the window, her back turned to her, humming a lullaby. Her small voice carried clearly in the quiet:
“They said this was the last round, so they won't let me stay.”
“Adaeze" Nneka called out calmly.
Adaeze turned slowly. The girl's eyes filled with sadness that was far beyond a nine-year-old.
"Who’s they?” Nneka asked, her voice barely audible.
“The water. The wind

And that's when the glittering started coming off, slowly, piece by piece, like cheap nail polish. PayPal Resolution Center @Gmail. PayPal transactions @Gmail. William Books Publishing with no website, no physical address, no telephone number. Jennifer Walsh who always replied in hours but never answered directly regarding timeliness or company history.
I sat there staring at my computer screen, as if I was seeing myself from outside my own body. All those nights. All those hours. All that meticulous labor; rewriting paragraphs, fact-checking historical data, researching proper use of commas in dialogue tagging.

“I need someone who knows the lines, Oga. You're just a janitor who knows nothing about acting." The director wrote him off. "This is serious business." He added and sat on his seat then he buried his head in his hands.
But Paul didn't give up, he walked to the center of the stage. His love for acting fuelled him. Suddenly, something shifted in the air. Without a script. He read the lines, he had memorized the entire play just from listening.
“I may be old, but I have seen the world twist and turn like a wet towel,” he began, voice deep and steady.
The room went silent. The director raises his head to see him act. All eyes fell on him.
