Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @universoperdido, with the story:

Friendship Destroyed

That friendship was never repaired again. For the next few months, my boyfriend and his former best friend were at war, until the waters were calmed by the intervention of superiors, and everything was balanced. After that, he never again became friends with anyone at work.

Curator's comment :

The qualities of universoperdido as a writer shine in this CNF story in which he stages an everyday and recurring episode in many friendly relationships that are affected by bad behavior and lack of respect, from one of the parties, to the intimacy between friends. He tells how his boyfriend was betrayed by his best friend at work. What stands out is the fluidity of the actions, the clear imagery and the way it manages to fully convey the emotions of the characters.

Highlighting @Zerah, with the story:

Uncle Monday

I kept watching in silence as all this took place. Somehow within me, I knew something was off. I didn’t know what exactly, but my stomach didn’t sit well anytime Brother Monday was around. I've always known him to be someone who wasn't straightforward. Yet, even after scamming his supposed siblings in the past, they still found a way to trust him wholeheartedly.

Curator's comment :

For the CNF call @zerah creates an interesting character. An old friend of the family becomes so close that on the occasion of a wedding in the family they all put their trust in him and their monetary contribution to rent the place where the wedding is supposed to take place. Throughout the story the author makes us suspicious of the character and hints that she will manage to uncover his evil deeds before everyone. The predictable ending is presented: the man runs away with the family's resources. But in spite of this, the wedding takes place.

Highlighting @jennyzee1, with the story:

A mischievous friend

My dad had too many people who called him their friend. I didn't like it, but there was nothing I could do to reduce my dad's excessive love for mankind. He was the kind of man who would sacrifice all he had for someone else's benefit, but one day, he had an experience that tormented him for a long period of time.

Curator's comment :

Jennyzee1 writes an interesting CNF. She tells about how inordinate kindness can put people in dangerous positions. The writing describes her intuition for categorizing people she's just met, a faculty her father doesn't have that leads him to bring strangers into his home. Good story, good subject, good writing.

This Week's Prompt 135

Curiosity killed the cat.

Meaning: A person may come to harm if they are too curious and have a tendency to stick their noses into matters that do not concern them.

  • Are you excessively curious? Has it placed you in awkward situations or even caused you trouble?

  • Perhaps you know someone who consistently lands in hot water or even puts others in compromising circumstances because they are far too curious.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
