Lending A Helping Hand To A Dear Friend

Well Hello Fellow Technicians And Hivers

I have a friend in need, and they say it's a friend indeed. Now I don't really know why the saying goes like that but yeah let's see where we can help the guy.
He has a oil leak on the gear selector housing on the transmission, a small leak yet one that poses a problem. Now one might argue that it's an easy job and yes it is, but don't think you'll get away with it as easy as replacing a seal on a vehicle with 250 000 kilometers on the clock. That gear selector housing definitely has a lot of wear on it and that is probably why the seal started leaking.
So changing the seal won't help for very long. What I instead did was find a transmission at work which is still in a very good condition and took the gear selector housing of that transmission, cleaned it up nicely and inspected it to see if it will do the job.
All that is needed was to remove the old one and refit the "new" one in it's place.
Well it's a long weekend and I had all the time in the world to do it but I decided to get up real early and start of with the job, the reason for this is that if I somehow mess up and break something on this high mileage car I would still have time to correct my wrongs, fortunately I didn't mess up. Yah.
This car needs a lot of love, and I even told the bud. I can fix this problem but we would have to look in and fix most of the other stuff as well. So in a few weeks I'll be doing a proper service on this neglected little tank.
And yes it's not the best looking car but they sure are tanky!

Starting off we need to remove a few things before we can replace the selector housing, I know most people would try to work around everything, I am just not in the mood to do it all over because of grime falling in the wrong places and causing the sealer to well not seal.
I removed the battery, along with the computer of the vehicle, or rather I didn't remove the computer I just unbolted it out of place, I don't want to risk removing the plugs and then end up actually breaking them so I scooted it out of the way. Then I removed the battery box and well I was almost where I needed to be.
We can now see the transmission, notice the dirty box on top of the transmission. Well yeah that's the one needing replacement, don't worry I'll add the new replacement part in a little bit later on in the post.
I need to remove a few things from it as well, the links will have to be popped off. Now I'll be honest I have a history with breaking gear links so I took my sweet damn time to remove them. Usually what I do is I take a 13mm spanner and push it underneath the link and wedge it up slowly and they'll pop right off.
Then the slave-cylinder also needs removing along with the earth cable that is connected onto the housing as well. Damn they have so much bolted down onto that housing, unbelievable.
Ahhhhh that's more like it ey, now we can actually see the entire gear selector housing, this car has traveled some heavy miles looking at the grime on it. But at-least that is what we are here for, to sort out the troubles.
I have a feeling that sooner or later I will have to rebuild the transmission as well, just giving it a quick look the transmission itself needs a service aswell, might need to add that into the bunch.
I am surprised at how easily it came off, usually these things have to be twisted sideways, pushed in and then twisted back again pulled up through all the gear selectors, this is actually a very nice build here.
Just pop it off and back again.
Out with the old and in with the "new."
This one looks real ganky to say the least. 🤣
I felt and tested it and it does seem to have some wear on it, it's not a lost cause though, this can be rebuilt and made as if it was new.
The oil leak came from that seal, and looking at the general area I can understand why though, messy mess.
Before fitting the new parts, I took a cloth and stuffed it inside the transmission and then proceeded to clean off all the old sealant. This in it self took some time, I might be wrong but it appears that there were two types of sealers on it, one that was almost like a locktight based substance and one that was the normal silicone sealer so if I'm right this has already been replaced at some point.
No worries we shall clean it up nicely and fit everything back in, this way we can at-least see if there is an oil leak again and if so where it is coming from.
Now just look at this beautifull shiny part! Damn I love fitting new and clean parts.
It's some sort of satisfying feeling I can't really describe it, those who work on vehicles might know what feeling I am referring to.
Anyways, this part is ready to go, we just need to swap out the weight on it before we can put her back into her place.
I actually have no idea why they put these massive counter weights on, like why if you shift it into the gear why would it jump out of gear unless you have problems inside the transmission? Or perhaps they add some weight when shifting making the shifting a little bit smoother, I should have tested it first without it to see if it would actually make a difference at all.
Oh well it's sorted now so no worries.
AHHH the feels is amazing, doesn't it just look pleasing to look at?
I mean come on, won't you be happy when you get your car back and it where the work was done it looks damn beautifull and shiny? I know I would. 😎
Well it's got it's sealant and fitted back into place, now I just need to add all the extras that I removed from the transmission selector, namely the slave cylinder the gear links and the earth cable.
Mind you I actually bolted everything back into place except the earth cable and then I had to remove the slave cylinder again to refit the earth cable, rookie mistake I know but at-least it was only two bolts and bam done with the job.
After that I need to refit the battery box and put the computer back into its original place and then I am off to test drive the car.
I noticed the slave cylinder is a bit damaged but still working, I pointed this out to my friend and told him it might be better if we replace that part as well, it's not required just yet but rather replace it than be left in the traffic with no clutch, no need for unneeded headaches right?
Well that concludes the job I did on this little Fiat Palio 1.6 liter.
Laughs most people don't really want to work on these cars but I am more than happy to do a full service for him and make a buck or two.
