But before I show you that, I'll tell you about something we ate while returning from
El Guaical Well, to see if you know it and/or have tried it.
Pero antes de mostrarles eso, les contaré de algo que comimos mientras regresábamos del Pozo El Guaical, a ver si lo conocen y/o lo han probado.
Almost at the end of the road, near the village, we came across a Guama tree (Inga edulis) that had several of its long fruits hanging, and of course, we didn't resist and cut a few. There were people in the group who didn't know about them and had never tasted them, so it was their chance.
Casi en la parte final del camino, ya cerca del pueblo, nos topamos con un árbol de Guama (Inga edulis) que tenía varios de sus largos frutos colgando, y claro, no nos resistimos y cortamos unos cuantos. Había gente del grupo que no sabía de ellos y nunca los había probado, así que fue su oportunidad.
I do know it and have tried it, but I haven't eaten it in a long time because this is a fruit that is not sold in the markets, you can get it on the street if an occasional vendor brings it to town.
Yo sí la conozco y la he probado, pero hacía mucho tiempo que no la comía porque esta es una fruta que no la venden en los mercados, la puedes conseguir por ahí en la calle si algún vendedor ocasional la trae a la ciudad.
When you open it, the fruits are distributed lengthwise, and are similar to those of cocoa, with a white velvety cover that is sweet, but when you suck on them, you are left with a black seed that, unlike cocoa, is not consumed.
Cuando la abres tiene los frutos distribuidos a lo largo, y son parecidos a los del cacao, con una cubierta blanca aterciopelada que es dulce, pero al chuparlos, te queda una semilla negra, que a diferencia del cacao, no se consume.
Well, as I told you in the previous post, after the somewhat extreme experience at El Guaical well, some people in the group still had energy, and upon returning to town, as it was early (4:30 pm), we decided that we wanted to do something else, which was to visit The Viewpoint of La Sierra, which is at the entrance of the village, near the inn where we were staying.
Bueno, como les conté en la publicación anterior, después de la experiencia algo extrema en el Pozo El Guaical, algunas personas del grupo aún teníamos energía, y al regresar al pueblo, como era temprano (las 4:30 pm), decidimos que queríamos hacer algo más, que era conocer El Mirador de La Sierra, que está en la entrada del pueblo, cerca de la posada donde nos estábamos alojando.
So we set off, also looking for a place to sit for a while and have a refreshing drink.
Así que nos pusimos en marcha, buscando además algún sitio para sentarnos un rato y beber algo refrescante.
Walking along this main road, which crosses the entire town of La Sierra, we find another fruit, very coveted, the avocado.
Caminando por esta vía principal, que atraviesa todo el pueblo de La Sierra, nos encontramos con otra fruta, muy codiciada, el aguacate.
It turns out that there is a lot of production here, but there are no farms, just each house has several avocado trees and buyers from different places come to take the production negotiating directly with the owners of the plants.
Resulta que aquí se produce mucho, pero no hay fincas, simplemente cada casa tiene varios árboles de aguacate y los compradores de diferentes lugares vienen a llevarse la producción negociando directamente con los dueños de las matas.
It was tempting to see them hanging there, but they were not ready to be cut 😄. In the city they are very expensive now because it's not in season, the kg is like $5 and here they sell it for $2.
Era tentador verlos ahí colgando, pero no estaban listos para ser cortados 😄. En la ciudad están muy caros ahora porque no es temporada, el kg está como en $5 y aquí lo venden en $2.
We continued walking and further down the street we came across a scene of buying and selling.
Seguimos caminando y más adelante en plena calle nos topamos con una escena de compraventa.
Look at these beauties! We were told that these avocados were being bought by a cosmetic industry, they were going to be used for products like shampoos, conditioners, creams, etc.
¡Miren qué bellezas! Nos dijeron que estos aguacates los estaba comprando una industria cosmética, iban a ser utilizados para productos como champús, acondicionadores, cremas, etc.
We moved on and arrived at a court of bolas criollas (creole balls), a traditional Venezuelan game or sport, and next to it, what we were looking for, a bar. There we went in to have a cold drink and sit for a while.
Avanzamos y llegamos a una cancha de bolas criollas, un juego o deporte tradicional venezolano, y al lado, lo que estábamos buscando, un bar. Allí entramos para tomarnos algo frío y sentarnos un rato.
Most of the group drank beers, and the minority of us drank malta, that rich dark fizzy drink, made from malted barley and without alcohol.
La mayoría del grupo tomó cervezas, y la minoría tomamos malta, esa rica bebida gaseosa oscura, hecha con cebada malteada y sin alcohol.

See the malta, but also see how my hiking sandals and especially the socks (which were white with some black) looked after the hike down the river and the dusty trail 😂.

After chatting and resting for a while, and a few rounds of beers and malts, we continued walking to the viewpoint, which was quite close.
Después de conversar y descansar un rato, y de unas rondas de cervezas y maltas, seguimos caminando hasta el mirador, que estaba bastante cerca.
We reach the base of the hill, take a trail uphill to the left, and in about 5-6 minutes we reach the top.
Llegamos a la base del cerro, tomamos un sendero en subida a la izquierda, y en unos 5-6 minutos alcanzamos la cima.
There is a roofed structure with some benches, and the place was lonely, so we lay down on the benches, took lots of pictures, ate some of the food that some of our companions still had left and waited for the golden hour.
Allí hay una estructura techada con unos bancos, y el lugar estaba solo, así que nos acostamos en los bancos, tomamos muchas fotos, comimos algunas cosas que aún les quedaban a unas compañeras y esperamos la hora dorada.
We thought we weren't going to get a good view of the sunset because the sky had clouded over a bit, but then it cleared up.
Pensamos que no íbamos a ver bien el atardecer porque el cielo se había nublado un poco, pero luego se fue despejando.
It was about 5:15 in the afternoon and the atmosphere was already cool and with a very nice light breeze, plus the 360º views of the surroundings are a beauty, with all those mountains and the little roads and houses in the distance.
Eran como las 5:15 de la tarde y ya el ambiente estaba fresco y con una brisa ligera muy agradable, además las vistas de º360 de los alrededores son una belleza, con todas esas montañas y los caminitos y casitas a lo lejos.
There was no information there about the viewpoint, such as when it was established as such, what date the structure was built, etc. What we had been told was that it was the highest point of the village, about 1000 meters in altitude or so.
No había ninguna información allí sobre el mirador, como por ejemplo cuándo se estableció como tal, en qué fecha se construyó la estructura, etc. Lo que sí nos habían dicho es que era el punto más alto del pueblo, unos 1.000 metros de altitud o algo así.
Already after 6:00 pm the sun began to display the colors of its farewell between yellow and orange tones. Obviously, apart from contemplating, we all wanted to take a bit of that with us through photography, and there we took portraits of ourselves with the sunset.
Ya pasadas las 6:00 pm el sol empezó a desplegar los colores de su despedida entre tonos amarillos y naranjas. Obviamente aparte de contemplar, todos queríamos llevarnos un poco de eso a través de la fotografía, y allí nos retratamos con el atardecer.
I really liked how the photos turned out with our figures backlit, it gave time for all of us to have a mini session.
Me gustó mucho cómo quedaron las fotos con nuestras figuras a contraluz, dio tiempo para que todos nos hiciéramos una mini sesión.
A few seconds before the sun went down, just as we were about to descend, a large group arrived at the viewpoint, fortunately we went earlier and enjoyed the place without so many people.
Unos segundos antes de que el sol se escondiera, ya cuando íbamos a bajar, llegó un grupo grande al mirador, menos mal que fuimos más temprano y disfrutamos del lugar sin tanta gente.
The next day, another river adventure awaited us, until then!
