During these carnivals I decided to return to adventures in nature with a trip to a place that is not popular when it comes to naming vacation destinations in Venezuela, I'm talking about the Cojedes state, located in the central-western part of the country.
En estos carnavales decidí volver a las aventuras en la naturaleza con un viaje a un lugar que digamos no es popular cuando se trata de nombrar destinos vacacionales en Venezuela, les hablo del estado Cojedes, ubicado en el centro-occidente del país.
I did this three-day trip with the people from the Caracas Excursion Center (CEC), I hadn't been out with them for a long time and I needed it, so when I saw the program they had for the Carnival holiday: “The Sierra of Cojedes”, I didn't hesitate to sign up.
Este viaje de tres días lo hice con la gente del Centro Excursionista Caracas (CEC), tenía mucho tiempo que no salía con ellos y ya me hacía falta, por eso cuando vi la programación que tenían para el asueto de Carnaval: “La Sierra de Cojedes”, no dudé en anotarme.
The tour bus picked me up in Aragua state on Saturday morning, March 1st and we continued the trip to our destination, there were 27 people in the group. Almost at 11:00 am we arrived at Tinaquillo, a municipality in Cojedes state where this adventure began.
El autobús de la excursión me recogió en el estado Aragua el sábado 1 de marzo en la mañana y continuamos el viaje hacia nuestro destino, éramos 27 personas en el grupo. Casi a las 11:00 am llegamos a Tinaquillo, municipio del estado Cojedes donde comenzó esta aventura.
We made a brief stop there to meet the main guide of the trip and then continued on to the sector El Mijao de La Pica.
Hicimos una breve parada allí para encontrarnos con el guía principal del viaje y luego seguimos hacia el sector El Mijao de La Pica.
At a tourist stop we left our backpacks, went to the bathroom and freshened up a bit, to start the first day's itinerary: to climb up to Las Tetas de Tinaquillo (Tinaquillo tits).
En un parador turístico dejamos nuestras mochilas, fuimos al baño y nos refrescamos un poco, para de una vez comenzar a cumplir el itinerario del primer día: subir a Las Tetas de Tinaquillo.
In this place we had the opportunity to see a spectacular tree, a Wild Cashew (Anacardium excelsum), which we were told is more than 200 years old. With a height of about 70 meters and a trunk of about 7 meters in diameter, it has of course become a symbol of the area.
En este lugar tuvimos la oportunidad de ver un árbol espectacular, un Mijao (Anacardium excelsum), que nos contaron tiene más de 200 años. Con una altura de unos 70 metros y un tronco de unos 7 metros de diámetro, se ha convertido, por supuesto, en un símbolo de la zona.
We were supposed to get here earlier, but it was already 12:30 noon and the heat was very strong, so before starting the hike to the hill the guide asked us if we were sure to go at that time, not ideal for starting an excursion, but we all wanted to because if we didn't climb it that day we would not have time to do it.
Se suponía que íbamos a llegar aquí más temprano, pero ya eran las 12:30 del mediodía y el calor estaba muy fuerte, por eso antes de comenzar la caminata al cerro el guía nos preguntó si estábamos seguros de ir a esa hora, no ideal para iniciar una excursión, pero todos quisimos porque si no lo subíamos ese día ya no nos daría tiempo de hacerlo.
And so we set off, not caring that there would be almost no shade along the way because there is not much vegetation. This route is about 10 km round trip.
Y así nos pusimos en marcha, sin importarnos que en el trayecto casi no habría sombra porque no hay mucha vegetación. Esta ruta es de unos 10 km ida y vuelta.
There are many farms here, and you can see cattle, horses and chickens running around.
En este lugar hay muchas fincas, y puedes ver el ganado, los caballos y las gallinas sueltas por ahí.
Those two hills that you see in the background are Las Tetas (The Tits) / Esos dos cerros que se ven al fondo son Las Tetas
We arrived at a fenced land where they opened the gates for us, here we could see better where we were going, the truth is that it looked quite far away 😅.
Llegamos a un terreno cercado donde nos abrieron las puertas, aquí ya podíamos ver mejor hacia dónde íbamos, la verdad es que se veía bastante lejos 😅.
As you can see in the photos, most of the vegetation is parched, because it is summer in Venezuela, or the dry season.
Como pueden ver en las fotos, la mayor parte de la vegetación está reseca, y es que estamos en verano en Venezuela, o temporada de sequía.
This small lagoon below was the only water reservoir we saw on the trail.
Esta pequeña laguna a continuación fue el único depósito de agua que vimos en el camino.
At this point the group had already dispersed, as usually happens on hikes, because everyone goes at their own pace, but there are always points where the guide in front asks to wait a while so that people don't fall too far behind.
Ya en este punto el grupo se había dispersado, como suele pasar en las caminatas, porque cada quien va a su ritmo, pero siempre hay puntos donde el guía que va adelante pide esperar un rato para que la gente no se quede muy atrás.
When we had a little more than half an hour of walking, the uphill part began, the legs were already feeling the elevation of the terrain and the heat was roasting us more 😂.
Cuando llevábamos poco más de media hora caminando, comenzó la parte de subida como tal, las piernas ya iban sintiendo la elevación del terreno y el calor nos estaba asando más 😂.
I was in the group ahead, but some continued at a fast pace and broke away, leading the excursion.
Yo iba en el grupo de delante, pero algunos siguieron a un ritmo rápido y se separaron liderando la excursión.
When I climb mountains I prefer to go slow rather than stop to rest, I only do it for a few seconds to drink water calmly, for example, or to see the scenery. Stopping too much makes your body cool down, you lose your rhythm and the route becomes heavier.
Cuando subo montañas prefiero ir lento que detenerme a descansar, sólo lo hago unos segundos para tomar agua con calma, por ejemplo, o ver el paisaje. Pararte demasiado hace que tu cuerpo se enfríe, pierdas el ritmo y la ruta te resulte más pesada.
We wondered why there was a paved stretch in this high part, and later we had the answer, there was a house, apparently belonging to someone wealthy because it even had a swimming pool, unfortunately everything was abandoned and stripped.
Nos preguntamos por qué había un tramo pavimentado en esta parte ya alta, y más adelante tuvimos la respuesta, había una casa, al parecer de alguien adinerado porque hasta piscina tenía, lamentablemente todo estaba abandonado y desvalijado.

After this begins the steepest part of the route, with a terrain full of small stones, a lot of undergrowth and the view of Las Tetas a little more possible, closer. We were going to reach the peak on the right hand side, the one with antennas on its summit.
Después de esto comienza la parte más empinada de la ruta, con un terreno lleno de pequeñas piedras, mucha maleza y la vista de Las Tetas un poco más posible, más cercana. Nosotros íbamos a llegar al pico a mano derecha, el que tiene unas antenas en su cima.

We finally found some shade around here, a mini forest with some greenery.
Por fin encontramos algo de sombra por aquí, un mini bosque con algo de verdor.
Then the whole path is clear, without trees or shade, and no cloud hid the sun 😅. Of course, the scenery around is beautiful, with the view of the village and other mountains in the distance.
Luego ya todo el camino es despejado, sin árboles ni sombra, y ninguna nube escondió al sol 😅. Eso sí, los paisajes alrededor bellísimos, con la vista del pueblo y otras montañas a lo lejos.
It was already 2:00 in the afternoon, sweat was pouring down my body and the summit still looked far away.
Ya eran las 2:00 de la tarde, el sudor brotaba por todo mi cuerpo y aún la cima se veía lejos.
When I saw that the ascent was getting steeper, I stopped to eat a guava candy, I needed that energy badly!
Cuando vi que el ascenso se hacía más pronunciado, me paré para comerme un dulcito de guayaba, ¡necesitaba esa energía con urgencia!
In front of me was one of the guides, a local peasant, and of course, I was talking to him, asking him questions.
Delante de mí estaba uno de los guías, un campesino de la zona, y claro, yo iba hablando con él, preguntándole cosas.
He told me that he climbed this mountain all the time, at better hours obviously 😆, early in the morning or at sunset, and that it was not a very visited place, but that there is a tradition of the people of the town of Tinaquillo to climb it every October 12, and on that day a crowd comes. This tradition began as a tourist-religious activity in 1993, at the initiative of the parish priest.
Me dijo que subía a esta montaña todo el tiempo, a mejores horas obviamente 😆, temprano en la mañana o al atardecer, y que no era un lugar muy visitado, pero que hay una tradición de la gente del pueblo de Tinaquillo de subirla cada 12 de octubre, y ese día si viene una multitud. Esta tradición empezó como una actividad turístico-religiosa en 1993, por iniciativa del sacerdote de la parroquia.
Well, it was notorious that not many people come here and that is why they do not do maintenance, because the weeds were very overgrown, so much so that in many parts there was no marked path and we advanced stepping on the dry grass.
Bueno, era notorio que aquí no viene mucha gente y por eso no hacen mantenimiento, porque la maleza estaba muy crecida, tanto que en muchas partes no había sendero marcado y avanzamos pisando la hierba seca.
Around there we saw several plants with bright yellow fruits, the guide told me that they were called devil apples or something like that and that they could not be eaten because they are toxic.
Por allí vimos varias plantas con unas frutas de estridente color amarillo, el guía me dijo que se llamaban manzanas del diablo o algo así y que no se podían comer porque son tóxicas.
We were already in the final stretch of the ascent, and suddenly some pipes and concrete stairs appeared, some of which could not even be seen because of the dense undergrowth that had grown there.
Ya estábamos en la recta final del ascenso, y de repente aparecieron unos tubos y unas escaleras de concreto, algunas ni se veían por la tupida maleza que había crecido allí.
The intense heat had me exhausted, my legs were exploding and these “stairs to heaven” continued. I said: I'm going to take advantage of the tube accompanying the ladder to support myself and climb with less effort, but when I touched that metal it was burning 😂, so there was no help.
El intenso calor me tenía agotada, mis piernas estaban explotando y estas “escaleras al cielo” continuaban. Dije: voy a aprovechar el tubo que acompaña la escalera para apoyarme y subir con menos esfuerzo, pero cuando toqué ese metal estaba ardiendo 😂, así que no hubo ayuda.
I looked at the landscape for a moment, took a deep breath and went on, it was only a short time away.
Miré un momento el paisaje, respiré profundo y seguí, faltaba poco.
The last steps to the top were a little complicated because there was a lot more undergrowth and also those plants that stick to your clothes and slow you down, what we call here “jala pa' atrás” (pull you back), so you had to go carefully to avoid tearing your clothes and skin.
Los últimos pasos hacia la cima se complicaron un poco porque había mucha más maleza y también de esas plantas que se te pegan en la ropa y te frenan, lo que aquí llamamos “jala pa’ atrás”, entonces había que pasar con cuidado para no rasgarse las vestiduras y la piel.
I cut my fingers a little on some thorns / Me corté un poco en los dedos con unas espinas
Finally the last flight of stairs and that was it! The first thing I saw was an abandoned structure, and then some more, and the three fellows who arrived first, and I was proudly the first woman in the group to shout summit!
¡Por fin el último tramo de escalera y listo! Lo primero que vi fue una estructura abandonada, y luego otras más, y a los tres compañeros que llegaron primero, orgullosamente fui la primera mujer del grupo en gritar ¡cumbre!
The altitude of this mountain is 1053 meters above sea level, and after Cerro Azul (1780 masl) it is the second highest mountain in the state of Cojedes.
La altitud de este cerro es de 1053 metros sobre el nivel del mar, y después de Cerro Azul (1780 msnm) es la segunda montaña más alta del estado Cojedes.
I spent only about 15 minutes at the highest point, looking and taking pictures, the sun was too strong. There is also a cross here, but you can hardly see it because the brush almost covers it all.
Estuve sólo unos 15 minutos en la parte más alta, mirando y haciendo fotografías, el sol estaba demasiado fuerte. También hay una cruz acá, que apenas se ve porque la maleza casi la tapa toda.
I went down a few meters to take refuge in the abandoned structure, sit for a while, drink some (hot) water, eat something and rest. The guide was there and then the rest of the group arrived little by little.
Bajé unos metros para refugiarme en la estructura abandonada, sentarme un rato, beber agua (caliente) comer algo y descansar. Allí estaba el guía y luego fueron llegando poco a poco los demás compañeros del grupo.
In this kind of room seemed to be the operational controls or something like that of the antennas or towers, and the guide told us that there was a kind of cable car with which workers climbed the materials, but that was many years ago, more than 30, he said.
En esta especie de cuarto parecían estar los controles operativos o algo así de las antenas o torres, y el guía nos dijo que había una especie de teleférico con el que los trabajadores subían los materiales, pero de eso hace muchos años, más de 30 dijo.
At about 3:30 pm, the first of us who had reached the summit began to descend little by little, at a relaxed pace. Although we climbed this hill in somewhat extreme conditions due to the midday heat, I really enjoyed this excursion, getting to know a new mountain always excites me and this natural monument is quite peculiar.
Como a las 3:30 pm, los primeros que habíamos llegado a la cima comenzamos a bajar poco a poco, a un ritmo relajado. A pesar de que subimos a este cerro en condiciones algo extremas por el calor del mediodía, disfruté mucho esta excursión, conocer una nueva montaña siempre me emociona y este monumento natural es bastante peculiar.
Then someone in the group commented that we had to come back another time because we only had time to go up to one of Las Tetas, well, we'll have to settle that debt, but please, not at noon 😄.
Luego alguien del grupo comentó que había que volver en otra oportunidad porque sólo nos dio tiempo de subir a una de Las Tetas, bueno, tendremos que saldar esa deuda, pero por favor, que no sea al mediodía 😄.
