Radiance.

It feels warm on your skin,
Radiant to your eyes,
Then you sense something.
Your attention is drawn
Never to return.
You turn to look back, but you're pulled away
Demanded elsewhere.
The light hot on your back
Itching you act with haste: it won't be enough.
It’s been too long, you see the light’s reflection.
You move to look at it, not yet,
Your hands are hard.
Your arms are tired.
Not yet.
How long has it been?
You don't know.
Thinking about it makes it worse.
Maybe soon?
Silence.
You don’t feel it anymore.
You haven't in recent memory.
You were needed elsewhere: it was worth it.
You had no choice.
I’m so sorry.
Is it all too much?
Do you find it unfair?
You have no choice.
Oblivion is little better.
Darkness swirls around you.
Has your time come?
I cannot say.
Close your eyes now:
Rest.
Your body is tired, your mind is weary:
Sleep.
Warmth covers your body,
You scarcely remember its touch.
You open your eyes.
The light fills them
Finally.
You are free.
