The visit to the Santo Inácio Zoo, in Vila Nova de Gaia, was an unforgettable experience. From the moment you enter, the atmosphere conveys a sense of tranquility, contrasting with the wildlife that unfolds around us. This zoo, founded in 1997, has the mission of providing a space for education and conservation of fauna and flora, and is one of the most sought-after destinations for families in the Porto region. The zoo is organized in such a way as to allow visitors to feel integrated into the animals' lives, with, for example, the safari area, where the animals live in large natural spaces, recreating their habitat as faithfully as possible.

A visita ao Zoo de Santo Inácio, em Vila Nova de Gaia, foi uma experiência inesquecível. Desde a entrada, o ambiente transmite uma sensação de tranquilidade, contrastando com a vida selvagem que se desenrola à nossa volta. Este zoológico, fundado em 1997, tem como missão proporcionar um espaço de educação e conservação da fauna e flora, sendo um dos destinos mais procurados por famílias da região do Porto. O zoo está organizado de forma a permitir que os visitantes se sintam integrados na vida dos animais, com por exemplo a área do safari, onde os animais vivem em amplos espaços naturais, recriando o seu habitat o mais fielmente possível.

At the beginning of our visit, we went to the safari area, one of the highlights of the Zoo. As we progressed, we were surrounded by an impressive variety of species. Starting with the imposing giraffes, which, with their natural elegance, stood out from a distance, strolling calmly among the trees and bushes. It is fascinating to observe her height and grace. The way they move, with their long, slender necks, conveys a sense of serenity, but at the same time reveals their powerful presence in the savannah.

No início da nossa visita, dirigimo-nos para a zona do safari, um dos pontos altos do Zoo . À medida que avançávamos, éramos rodeados por uma variedade impressionante de espécies. A começar pelas imponentes girafas, que, com a sua elegância natural, se destacavam à distância, a passear calmamente entre as árvores e arbustos. É fascinante observar a sua altura e graciosidade. A forma como se movem, com pescoços longos e esguios, transmite uma sensação de serenidade, mas ao mesmo tempo revela a sua presença poderosa na savana.

As we continued our walk, we were surprised by a series of sounds that broke the momentary tranquility. The loud, deep roar of lions echoed in the distance, an impressive display of the power of this species. As we approached the area where the lions were, we could see them lying in the sun, but soon one of them came straight towards us, with a thunderous roar, it caught our attention. The strength and imposing nature of the lions were palpable, and their intense gazes seemed to evaluate our every move. It was impossible to avoid being fascinated by his majesty. The feeling of being close to this apex predator is a unique experience, especially when the sound of its roar spreads through the air.

Enquanto continuávamos o nosso passeio, fomos surpreendidos por uma série de sons que quebraram a tranquilidade momentânea. O rugido forte e profundo dos leões entoou ao longe, uma demonstração impressionante do poder desta espécie. À medida que nos aproximávamos da zona onde os leões estavam, podíamos vê-los estirados sob o sol, mas logo um deles veio direito a nós, com um rugido estrondoso, captou a nossa atenção. A força e a imponência dos leões eram palpáveis, e os seus olhares intensos pareciam avaliar cada movimento nosso. Não foi possível evitar o fascínio diante da sua majestade. A sensação de proximidade com este predador de topo é uma experiência única, especialmente quando o som do seu rugido se espalhava pelo ar.

A little further on, we were able to spot lynxes, stealthy and mysterious animals, which were quite active that day. Their agility and piercing eyes gave us the feeling that they were constantly observing everything around them, prepared for the slightest movement. His behavior seemed simultaneously cautious and curious, which made his coexistence with other animals even more curious.

Um pouco mais à frente, conseguimos avistar os linces, animais furtivos e misteriosos, que estavam bastante activos nesse dia. A sua agilidade e olhos penetrantes davam-nos a sensação de que estavam constantemente a observar tudo à sua volta, preparados para a menor movimentação. O seu comportamento parecia simultaneamente cauteloso e curioso, o que tornava ainda mais curioso o seu convívio com os outros animais.

The safari area also gave us the opportunity to see hyenas, creatures that, often misunderstood, turned out to be complex and fascinating beings. That day, we could hear the characteristic sounds of hyenas, which were not just laughter, but complex communication between them. When we arrived at their area, a fight between two hyenas caught our attention. The sound of her “laughter” left the little girl fascinated, but it was clear that it was a territorial dispute. The wild nature was on full display at that moment.

A zona do safari também nos deu a oportunidade de ver as hienas, criaturas que, frequentemente mal compreendidas, mostraram-se como seres complexos e fascinantes. Nesse dia, pudemos ouvir os sons característicos das hienas, que não eram apenas um riso, mas uma comunicação complexa entre elas. Quando chegámos à área delas, uma luta entre duas hienas chamou a nossa atenção. O som do seu “riso” deixou a mais pequena fascinada, mas estava claro que se tratava de uma disputa territorial. A natureza selvagem estava à flor da pele naquele momento.

As we progressed, we were able to observe other exotic animals, but the most memorable experience was, without a doubt, the safari area. The animals were particularly active that day, and a variety of behaviors were visible, from calm giraffes to hyenas in lively confrontation. The liveliness of the lions, which we had already heard roar, left us with a feeling of respect for their strength. Arriving at the camels we stopped to observe their movements. The two of them, each on their own side, stood in front of the gates as if they already knew the time and what awaited them. The keeper arrived and they went to their cage to feed and spend the night. The intelligence of these animals is incredible.

À medida que avançavamos, conseguimos observar outros animais exóticos, mas a experiência mais marcante ficou, sem dúvida, para a zona do safari. Os animais estavam particularmente activos naquele dia, e foi possível ver uma diversidade de comportamentos, desde as girafas tranquilas até às hienas num confronto animado. A vivacidade dos leões, que já tínhamos ouvido rugir, deixou-nos com uma sensação de respeito pela sua força. Chegados aos camelos paramos a observar as suas movimentações. Os dois cada um para seu lado, colocaram-se em frente aos portões como que já sabendo a hora e aquilo que os esperava. O tratador chegou e eles seguiram para a sua jaula para se alimentarem e passarem a noite. Incrível a inteligência destes animais.

Santo Inácio Zoo is a place where nature is not only observed, but felt. We were able to witness the authentic behavior of animals in spaces that seek to reproduce the conditions of their natural habitat. The combination of sounds, movements and proximity to the animals make this visit an educational and exciting experience, a true contact with wildlife. And, without a doubt, the memory of the lions' roar and the hyenas' peculiar sound will remain in the memory of our little girl and of all those who were there.

O Zoo de Santo Inácio é um lugar onde a natureza não é apenas observada, mas sentida. Pudemos testemunhar o comportamento autêntico dos animais em espaços que procuram reproduzir as condições do seu habitat natural. A combinação de sons, movimentos e a proximidade com os animais tornam esta visita uma experiência educativa e emocionante, um verdadeiro contacto com a vida selvagem. E, sem dúvida, a lembrança do rugido dos leões e o som peculiar das hienas vão permanecer na memória da nossa pequena e de todos aqueles que lá estavam.
