It took me some time in my family's genealogical research, to find the father of Jan Boule; who turned out to be a son of Louis Boulier and his wife Annetje Koninck. The difficulty arose because the family name's spelling was altered over generations; dating back from my great-great-great grandfather Daniel Johnson's wife, Deborah Belyea.
This likely happens when documents are filled in by someone not familiar with the language of the person being documented, be that a custom agent or clergy. In those cases they tend to use the phonetic pronunciation in their spelling in the related document. Such misspellings are somewhat common in older documents. This seemed to have happened repeatedly in the case of the Boulier family name.
The Boulier family name had already been altered in the records at Sleepy Hollow where Jan's birth was recorded. It states that he was born on Long Island at about 1698 to Louis Boule. It is also recorded in his marriage record that Jan lived in Long Island, NY before coming to the Philipsburg Manor in Tarrytown, NY.
He is first recorded in the marriage record of Tarrytown, NY in the Old Dutch Reformed Church of Sleepy Hollow, dated November 29, 1719. "Jan Beljee, born on Laungh Eylant and Helena Williemse* born - Philipsburg and both live here (Philipsburg). 7 Jan"
(John) pronounced "Yahn" was a member of the Old Dutch Reformed church in Tarrytown, NY. The church is across the street from the Philipsburg Manor where Helena was born, and later Hendreck was born.
Jan Beljee became an elder in the church and was frequently mentioned in the church register of members, marriages, baptisms.
I encountered one very possible name match in the records of Ship Passenger Lists of NY and NJ (1600-1825) p 141. In those taking "Oath of Allegiance" in Kings Co. NY September 26-30 in 1687. One JAN BUIJS, 39 years old of Breucklyn, NY. (Could be the brother of Louis) Also among those pledging allegiance to the King of England were many familiar names of other Tarrytown residence: Van Dyck, Jan Aertsen 26, Abramse, Cortjou (Cortlandts).
Other children with Bolie name:
Judick (#1837) * Marite (#910) * Robben (#1837)
Church Records * Deacon August 22, 1733 (three year term) * Retired August 1736 * Deacon August 22, 1746 * Elder August 10, 1751 (may have died in office, no retirement)
NOTES: * There is an interesting story about Helen (also known as Helena WILLEMZE or WILLIAMS): she was born about about 1697 in "Williamsburgh, NY" to a Robert Williams (etc.) and his wife. There, of course, was no New York in 1697 - this was a Dutch settlement - so it might be correct to say Williamsburgh, New Amsterdam. Williamsburgh still exists today as a part of Brooklyn and it's is probable that it got it's name from Helena's father.
